The money to be given to children who perform well academically is a big motivator for them to take their studies seriously. Most children in far flung areas say that they cannot go to school because they have no money for their baon. Now this money to be given as reward will make up for their baon and they can also give it to their parents to buy a little of the family's needs. In psychology it's one of the extrinsic motivation methods to encourage a person to do something. In this case the children are encourage to perform well and present good scholastic records with money as a reward.

I'm not saying it's bad...it is just very individualistic.

And suppose a poor parent does not have anything to give? how do you wish the child to be motivated?

I know a lot of achievers who came from very poor families. They were motivated to repay (than "getting paid") their parents' hard labor to get them to school. I believe this is pretty much a better motivator that we can teach a child to than motivating him/her for monetary returns.

Motivation for one's OWN END or BENEFIT makes one or a child think to only work for HIM/HERSELF. When a child is taught to become an achiever FOR OTHERS, the child learns to value people than personal interest.

    point well taken brownprose.

I'm not saying it's bad...it is just very individualistic.
this is a given. individualism exists the moment a kid socialize with other people. to quote lytslpr (again), it is just all in a matter of putting it in the proper perspective in the kid's young mind.

And suppose a poor parent does not have anything to give? how do you wish the child to be motivated?
i mean those who can afford and those who have reasonable means. if you have the means to provide extra incentive to your kid in the form of monetary reward for good grades, why not give it?
as what i said in my early post monetary rewards work well if accompanied by non-cash rewards. let's take the situation of a kid who is uninterested in going to school and attaining good grades. it could serve as an initial motivator. once he gets interested with studying and he realizes it if fun to learn, you can slowly extinguish the reinforcement by giving less monetary award but providing more non-cash rewards such as a pat in the back, praise, words of approval. that won't stop the kid from continuing the desired behavior (which is getting good grades).

well, it is different per se. Increasing an allowance as a reward is different from giving money on every good grade a kid gets. besides, an allowance is a necessity for every kid who goes to school.

and yes, u r right. increasing an allowance is still a monetary reward. but what we are talking here is the money given for every good grade which is separate from the allowance...but still, depende ra gyud na kung giunsa nimo paghatag and how u let him/her understand the value of money...a parent could give money for his/her piggy bank is an example.

assuming we have a 9 yr old kid:

    (1) buy him/her a nice pair of shoes if his/her school shoes seems already worn out a lil bit.
    (2) dinner at Jollibee, McDo or if not, Larsian.
    (3) a pat in the back, a praise in front of his/her friends, or relatives (show u r proud)
    (4) cook a very nice meal.
    (5) bring him/her to StoryLand or Time Zone.
    (6) bring him/her to the movies.
    (7) buy him/her a pint of ice cream.
( buy him/her a good DVD movie (pwede sab pirated...hehe)
    (9) buy him a comic book, buy her a short novel.
...and lots of other things to think of other than just giving money...

im sorry that was a typo. what i mean is that i don't want to give cash to my godchildren during xmas. instead i give them not so expensive toys or clothes...it's also because sometimes, instead of the given cash being spent by the kid, it will just go directly to pockets of their mothers...hahaha

i think the main point is not just about getting good grade.. pero purag creating a habit na work-> earn & save-> spend... good grades=good job(work), good job=more money(earn & save), more money = enjoy life(spend [mga ladies ma lingaw gud ani.. .. ])

my dad always says to me and my siblings "you want something you work for it" but i don't kai mag salig ra ko sa tiniguom na allowance.. lol..

if mao ni gi buhat sa akong dad during my high-school & collage days i would not go to school just to "get allowance".. i might have to work for it. like a real job.. and earn and proably get better grades rather than barely passing...

There are lots of ways to motivate a kid to study, but the world today is a very materialistic world. Money pushes people to do lots of things, studying included. So is this good or bad? Honestly, I can't tell. But I do agree with some of the posts here, pros and cons.
