I wouldn't completely rely on that fact. Christmas is also part of the winter solstice festivals that is also celebrated in parallel with other religions and cultures, like hannukah for example. My friend told me that muslim countries do not celebrate "consumerist" christmas.

Maybe this shows that they have more savings compared to us who celebrate christmas. And from the looks of things it is now quite difficult to discern those christians who celebrate christmas and those who are not even chirstians but still celebrate christmas. Or maybe winter festival is much more appropriate - to make it clear for those who do not know what christmas is at all.

Santa Claus or Saint Nikolas is originally from Russia. He is noted for his generosity and all acts of kindness.

The byzantine empire was responsible for the christianization of some parts of Russia. Ancient Byzantine is what is now known as turkey, which was defeated by the ottoman empire and eventually by the russians.

Emperor Justinian made sure that christianity would be the only religion in the byzantine empire during that time. And it is also noteworthy that the emperor of the holy roman empire(Byzantium) killed his own people by rounding them up in the hippodrome, closing the exits and unleashing his soldiers on his own people.

Pop culture changed all this to north pole to give that sense of mysticism that children find so interesting. But that's a child, let his imagination run wild. :mrgreen:

yup. Christmas is now a mixture of culture & religion from diff. parts of the world.

Important thing is let the child's imagination run wild.

When i was 5 yrs old, it really mystifies me how Santa fills our xmas stockings w/ goodies the following morning, only to find out the reality at 9 yrs old. but hey, we still loved that idea!!!

For Catholics, it simply means the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
