but the unit is not as durable as it seems. the battery life is so so at 1 and a half days of good usage. its the flip keypad that seems to be getting a lot of bad rap. its not durable at all and a lot of people including me have experienced it not working all of a sudden. thats 3k down the drain for that part. parts for this phone is bloody expensive. the phone is also a little buggy. kusog mu kalit ug restart with 3rd party apps and even the browser is hard to use
You have the option to remove the flip if you feel it will be a hindrance to you. The kit comes with a special screwdriver so that you can remove the flip. What will you lose without the flip? The numeric keypad of course, but if you like to txt message a lot, the QWERTY will do the trick naman. BTW, the flip has a magnet inside it, so you can actually force the unit into keypad mode (even if you removed the keypad) by just moving a small magnet close to the QWERTY. And most of all your negative comments about the phone disappears provided that:

    a) you replace the battery to BST-34
    b) you do the upgrade

    Period.

I wouldn't be surprised if you work for SE hehehe. This is exactly what the rep said when I called SE Cebu...they said the P990i is old and buggy, and that I should go for the P1i...clap clap clap galing ng marketing...

...hey wait I'm not trying to convince you guys to buy the P990i instead of the P1i--if you have the money, by all means go ahead.

    P990i with latest firmware.
-Those old firmware versions are really buggy. Very irritating i almost lost my interest with this phone.

What i like: Qwerty keyboard, touchscreen, L O N G E R battery life than n80. Just like most Nokia phones, it's a SYMBIAN phone.

P990i is really a good phone. Nibarato lang probably because of marketing strategy (or planned obsolescence). To those complaining of bugs and restarts, update to latest firmware NOW! and don't install buggy 3rd party apps. I was able to update a P990i with the latest CDA version R6E28. Installed dictionaries, games, IM+, office apps and so far it's definitely better. Wifi really works great. Very good for Worldmate and IM+.

I think the only problem with this phone is that it's too big for some people.

the p990 without the flip can be a pain to use sometimes. i tried it and couldn't live with it. decided to sell it cheap (my flip died on me) and i sold the unit to burn777 for a steal... the problem with the p990 software is that the interface isnt like the p1i or w950 without the flip. its a lot different and it requires you to use the pen specially when looking for contants to make the selections and dialling was a bit of a pain...

again my main comment about this phone is the construction flaws. it would have been a very nice phone with a more durable flip and a more stable and easier to use browser. somehow, the phone never made me happy since i got it. considering i was very happy with my p800 when i first got it, made getting the p990 a bit of a let down.

I was planning to do this when I got mine, because the previous owner said she was not sure if it was upgraded already, but when I checked sysinfo, it was already R9, so didn't proceed with the SE Update Service procedure.

It's been more than 2 weeks since I got my P990i and I'm extremely pleased with it. I will address the following complaints from people and why it doesn't apply to me.

    a) Flip is not durable - kung sa tagalog pa "nasa pag alaga lang yan" I've been using a Nokia 3315 since 2002, and it had absolutely no defects til this very day. If you treat the flip right, it won't go bad on you.

    b) Phone is slow - it may be slow compared to some Nokia phones in it's class, but it's not that unbearably slow--you just have to get used to navigating around.

    c) frequent crashes/hangups - this only occurred to me when I forgot to close some apps and loaded a very memory hungry game that I downloaded off the 'net. But treat the phone's memory right, and it won't go crazy on you

    d) you always have to use the stylus in "flip removed" configuration - well fortunately I have very small fingers, so the touchscreen isn't a problem for me--it's all a matter of getting used to a particular config

    I love my P990i

Was able to update 4 P990i units sold here @ istorya. SE Update service works. Just make sure you have a stable internet connection and that the computer you'll be using has a backup power supply in case of black outs.

For the nth times, P990i has RAM issues and it's bulky. BUT... IT IS STABLE when you're using the latest firmware. Flip is ok and it's durable. Web browsing is great when using the stylus and jog dial. For other wifi phones but without touchscreen, i know it's difficult to surf. It's like browsing using a computer with no mouse. P1i and P990i? I like the qwerty keypad of P990i. I don't see anything wrong with the construction. Again, some previous owners of P990i haven't tried the latest firmware so their comments will appear inaccurate now.
