    i call them,

    teenage misdirected angst

an individualistic assertion of freedom to choose and to express. unfortunately it compromises the safety and well-being of others; a thing that is not considerable and must not be ignored.

i think it fall on unto the immaturity of the people involve.
not all akrho and tau gamma are in those figths but they have been generalized due to the name being used. older members of the frat really have a life and a living and got something out of the frat good side.

but why can they stop the violence, well its not as easy as it looks because there are many individuals involve and you canno follow them wherever they and cannot control here actions.

    immaturity indeed.

a sense of tough group mentality. that way of thinking stating that the concept of group or the 'brotherhood' per se, reinforces or justifies one's careless acts of egotistic exploitation, bullying and that tough guy image. 'ah! naa bitaw koy grupo' attitude. the sheer chauvinism.

a lament on the pervertion of that sense of brotherhood that they supposedly hold so sacred... manipulated and used by misguided brains inside the frats for their own ends...

and the needless suffering. walay padulngan ug walay pulos.

daghan mang maayong fraternity. pero naa lang juy uban nga hamakon tanan nilang mga kauban makabalos lang sa pikas frat. hamakon ang reputasyon sa organisasyon basta makasamad lang ug makakita ug dugo sa kakaway.

may i say that all your comments are valid. but to generalized the fraternity as bad is like saying that all muslims or christians are bad. the fraternity as a system has been in existence for a long time. in fact most of the members of the senate and congress are fraternity men or women. you might say that the philippines is different but it is not. ferdinand marcos and benigno aquino are members of the same fraternity. jose rizal and most of our national heroes are members of the freemasons. the case of the tau gamma phi and the alpha kappa rho is somehow more reflective of the image of a fraternity because it is what we see in the newspaper. but i would say that joining a fraternity has been a major honor for me and has molded me to what i am right now. i hope and wish that there would be peace.

i agree satoy. my apologies if my comments about fraternities have that tone of generalization in them.

i am merely pointing out the bad eggs in the bunch. there are those fraternities, who have exhibited those aforementioned characteristics. the fault may lie on the organization itself or on the members. yet the fact that fraternities do not really have a good reputation says a lot.

one might call these as 'isolated incidences' but they do happen quite a lot. of course, the media's role in sensationalizing must never be ignored. but the mere fact itself that such acts of violence happen, suggest that something is most definitely wrong with the organization; may it be the people behind it or the organizational structure itself.

we must not discount the positive side of the concept of 'brotherhood' that the fraternities are espousing. i personally do not have any qualms about it. it is just fine. everything changes however when this noble sense of brotherhood is twisted for a particular person's maniacal obsession for revenge. heaven and hell will be sold just for him to extract sweet vengeance from those who have slighted him; most of the time dragging all his innocent brothers along the carnage.
