Default why is it that most of the bands in cebu is doing cover?

agree with you cujo. but i noticed u only mentioned the more or less "mainstream" cebuano bands (radio friendly bands). i'm pretty sure ur quite aware that cebu is also making noise in the underground scene nation wide for years... say for example the punk and hardcore scene and most of them dont play covers...

We need more bands that make good original music. The greatest weakness of an average band is the way they make a song. A "formula" as most people say--- break that barrier, then we got something-- now, if only the writers could really write.

yep.. i purposely didn't mention the punk and reggae scene because these are the scenes that have been surviving for the good part of 10yrs without corporate backing (although the latter scene has achieved mainstream success, albeit without needing it, i presume).

The punk scene that we know now has been in existence since 1995, although it's roots can be traced to the early 90's with bands like Barbed Wire and Bored leading the pack..

Thus, the cebu punk scene was spawned during the 2nd wave.. However, i didn't mention anything about it because, the punk scene hasn't always relied on radio airplay or album sales in order for it to get to where it is now.. In other words, the punk scene has ALWAYS BEEN SELF-SUSTAINING, SELF RELIANT.. It isn't really affected by the ebb and flow of mass consumerism..

If you think about it, the discography of Cebu Punk albums that have been released for the past 10yrs is very extensive, to say the least.. In fact, the number of punk releases alone can equal the total number of releases by the entire mainstream rock scene for the past 10yrs (i'm not sure if my figures are totally correct, but i'm sure it's pretty close..). My point is, the punk scene, although part of the ENTIRE Cebu Music Scene, has always been different, marching to a different beat and at most times, even a step ahead, thus, i consider it an entirely different scene, an older scene, a purer scene...

(forgive me for waxing nostalgic, but of all the genres/types of music that i listen to, punk and reggae hit closest to home..)

    peaceout..

Wala sab kaayo support ang PUNK SCENE sa una ... bands like Abhorred and Murder (late 80's) .. these bands should be given the credit for paving the rest of the PUNK bands that came out after them ... and I doubt if any of you has heard of these bands except maybe si CUJO. They came out along with 40, The Tribe, Raw Belief, BU, etc... wala kaayoy nakaila unless you were in that scene (and only a few were). Sayang lang gyud nga walay support.. `cause these bands were the real deal.

i agree with you cujo and ezra... thanks for pointing that out to me cujo. i've always been a fan of the cebu punk/reggae and ska scene eversince i came to this shore ... thats was during the mid 90's too bad i was too young and too probinsyano to have access to all the gigs and material..

to stick with the topic cebu music scene has always healthy but we lack the recognition and most bands na ma kit-an sa general public kay mga bands that do covers kay mao ra ang naa exposure here... i dunno why...

but nowadays if you want to hear true blue cebuano originals you dont have to go underground... thanks to bands such as junior kilat and urbandub to name a few...

    rock on!
