Back in the ancient days , kids (especially boys) are trained to be 'athletic' (even to the heights that they can compete in the Olympics) - more dominance you show the more you'll likely to succeed in life . Even rich kids until the 20th century were trained to be athletic and princes who are on the line of throne has to serve in the military (which this tradition is still being practiced) .
Since the birth of the modern Olympics in 1896 , they strictly enforced the "amateurism" . Athletes who were caught playing in any semi or pro league of any sport were disqualified and stripped-off their medals and Olympic achievements .
When the communist countries dominated the Eastern bloc in the mid-1900s , they began to financed athletic sports as they're the one started the concept of "sports commissions" , hence they pay athletes and provide them training . While the rest of the world , majority of its athletes were self-financed (the true amateurs) and still exist today . So in the late 1980s , the IOC decided to allow all sports to be played by professionals but subject to approval by respective governing body . I can't pretend to have knowledge in all sports , but in basketball in 1989 , FIBA (the governing body of basketball) , approved the request of the IOC to allow pro players (like NBA players) to play in the Basketball Olympics and changed the name of the organization from Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur to Federation Internationale de Basketball .
A host country will usually get awarded a spot for any event if they have players who can compete but it's a subject to approval by respective governing body . But it's a unique scenario for the Great Britain Men's Basketball Team . The basketball team was formed in 2005 to consists of players from England , Scotland , and Wales after London won the rights to host the 2012 Olympics . They formed the team inorder to have their own country to compete in basketball . The FIBA was concerned the future of the basketball team and feared this team might be a temporary merger and could be disbanded after the Olympics , and also the team's competitiveness to play at a high-level is unknown . FIBA gave them a condition to decide the future of this merger and show the competitiveness by playing in Eurobasket . In both Eurobasket 2009 and 2011 with 24 countries competed , they finished 13th place and apparently it was enough to impress FIBA to let them have a spot for the Basketball event in the 2012 Olympics .

USA vs. Colombia
Wambach (american striker) punched by Andrade (Colombian player)
"It's interesting - you think about yourself and what you would do on the street if somebody were to sucker-punch you," Wambach said. "And you have all of the lists of things that you would probably do to retaliate, but this is Olympics and I can't risk getting a red card, I can't risk getting a yellow card. We like to call it 'ice' - stay ice cold. They're trying to get me to retaliate, and I'm proud of myself for not doing that."
Andrade called the play an accident.
"Nothing happened," she said through an interpreter. "It was just a normal part of the game. We were both running, she ran across me and we collided. I had my hands in the air. It was an accident."
