putting melodrama aside, what is even sadder is how the genetic pool of the species has suddenly lost so much of its diversity in the extinction of these subspecies; the kind of diversity that tells us how this species has adapted and evolved into different forms in response to different pressures in its environment.

the fact that we lived in an age where the two recently-extinct subspecies weren't extensively studied due to their limited numbers suggests how much we have lost.
