The original purpose of Gabriela is to promote women's rights, and to give them credit, they have also made some positive achievements in this regard. What I don't agree with is when they use their supposedly legitimate organization for the pursuit of causes that have nothing to do with women's rights. Unfortunately, it is being used to advance the partisan political agendas of some of its leaders.

here's what the leader of the church's take on this issue:

“WHATEVER they like to do, I do not care,” was Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal’s reaction to the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) inquiry on the alleged harassment of high school students by a priest.

“I hope to respect the rights of others if they want also to respect my own rights...I have my own rights as an individual,” Cardinal Vidal continued.

The prelate was referring to his right not to name the priest. He clarified, though, that he is willing to cooperate with the NBI if ever he gets a subpoena.

But he did not categorically say that he will go to the NBI.

“I can open my house. We have to respect whatever (the government) wants to do...I’m still a citizen of this country,” said Vidal.

He would even go as far as opening the Archbishop’s Residence if the NBI wants to search it.

But Cardinal Vidal reiterated that he does not know where the priest is now, and cannot confirm whether reports that the priest has left the country are true.

“I do not know where he is because he has no permanent assignment,” the cardinal said.

The prelate was also saddened by reports that the high school students who accused the priest of harassment do not want to confess anymore.

“I’m sorry for that, but that’s why I have to suspend the priest and he cannot anymore hear confession,” he said.

.......The problem is they did not come to me...I’m open. And that is the usual procedure. Anybody who has a complaint about a priest, they come to me,” said Vidal.

“This time, they did not come to me, they went to you,” he continued, referring to the media.

The issue being highlighted in the media has also caused a bigger problem, opined the cardinal.

“As long as this is hot, ay mahirap...” said Vidal. “They think that all of us are like that, it cannot be. He is only one, he is an exception.”

Letter to the Editor - Treachery on the transfer of Smith's custody

    The Freeman 12/31/2006

We cry TREACHERY over the underhanded transfer of convicted rapist US Marine Lance Corporal Daniel Smith from the Makati City Jail to the US Embassy last night at about 11 p.m. Friday on orders of the Philippine government. We express our outrage and demand that the Philippine and US officials surface the criminal.

Like thieves in the night, the Arroyo administration and its cohorts from the foreign affairs and justice departments have made sure that whatever slight justice was attained for Nicole is overridden. They have staunchly defended the rapist and the VFA , as protector of the rapist, and now they have gone this far to show their servitude to United States by allowing the escape of a criminal. We hold them criminally liable for their betrayal of the people's trust, this rape of our nation's sovereignty.

The Balikatan military exercises are the US government's bribe to Philippine government for Smith's transfer of custody. In the first place, the Filipino people have long been demanding for the halt of these exercises, which are not only economically detrimental to the Filipino people but have also resulted to social costs including the rape of our women. This U.S. "aid" has only brought violence against the majority of the people and clearly serves the interests of the puppet Arroyo regime.

GABRIELA maintains its demand that U.S. troops be kicked out of the Philippine archipelago and that Balikatan be halted. We don't need these Yankees to fight their so-called terrorists; the real terrorists are in Malacañang and in its executive departments.

This latest travesty of justice only fuels the women's wrath against the Arroyo regime and further strengthens the people's movement to oust Arroyo, the number one US puppet.###
