This may only be one time. It's called marketing strategy. Dota 2, even though it has not been released yet has A LOOOOOOT of competition. HoN, LoL and even the original Dota. Statistically LoL has the most active community of players, and Valve, putting up a $1M dollar prize is their way to try and steal a large portion of the market that is already with those gaming franchises.

The GSL in korea is monthly :P I wonder if DoTA 2 can do as well once it is released, tried and tested.

Yup2x! So excited for the gaming scene diri, but that is for another thread discussion!

Large companies are starting to see the potential money they can make by sponsoring gaming tourneys, so if DoTA 2 is any good, there definitely will be large tourneys that will include DoTA 2 in their events (like MLG, DreamHack)

yup2 i agree its a pretty good marketing strategy 1. getting the dota community hype 2. getting some attention from pro gamers 3. getting attention from e-sport sponsors

Yep it's a huge RISK :P no pun intended hehe. Now that the hype is going, the question now is, can the game live up to the hype it has created? If it doesn't it will fail badly.
