This may only be one time. It's called marketing strategy. Dota 2, even though it has not been released yet has A LOOOOOOT of competition. HoN, LoL and even the original Dota. Statistically LoL has the most active community of players, and Valve, putting up a $1M dollar prize is their way to try and steal a large portion of the market that is already with those gaming franchises.
The GSL in korea is monthly :P I wonder if DoTA 2 can do as well once it is released, tried and tested.
