After the dancing inmates and flight attendants, the Cebu City Treasurer’s Office’s (CTO) dancing tax collectors caught the attention of some international media organizations following their exposure on national television.

Last Wednesday, a photographer from Agence France Presse (AFP) took photos of the City Government’s tax collectors doing their dance routine with City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva leading the team.

On Thursday, some members of the British news agency, Reuters, will visit City Hall to feature the 320 dancing tax collectors.

In an interview on Wednesday, Oliva said they are already prepping up for Thursday’s presentation for the Reuters crew.

They were preparing their costumes and the sound system.

Oliva hopes other local government units will follow what the City Government has done.

“This is our collection strategy nga angay sad sundon sa uban (the others should follow). I want to inculcate in the minds of every taxpayer that paying taxes is not a burden, that paying taxes is fun,” she said.

Oliva said she welcomes the idea of making the dancing tax collectors one of the tourist destinations in the city. She, however, said doesn’t want to have it commercialized.

“Nindot na pero dili sad na maayo. I just want the tourists to know that there are dancing tax collectors,” she said.

Mayor Michael Rama, meanwhile, is pleased by the moves of the CTO and the attention given to the team by some international media.

“That’s very good. Innovation is always welcome and encouraged,” he said.
Rama, however, is not encouraging other departments to do what CTO has done.

“Ma-dancing City Hall na ta ani?” the mayor said.

Videos of the city’s dancing tax collectors were aired the other night over ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol and GMA’s 24 Oras.

i don't care about them dancing. all i care about is the improvement of the service. they are paid to collect tax, not to dance.

the idea is quite good but still, i'm after the substance which is their service.
