Bitaw!
Gi-ingnan lang ko: "Why don't you give me a call first before ka mo come here, abi nimo my lola is very strict dyud kaayo and she doesn't like to see me entertain visitors sa tingklasi and she has scolded me many times in front of daghang tao!"
Game over!! No offense to mga Theresians ha! Istory-storya lang ba! Di ba, amo man ni pangan sa atong forum!
a lot of Theresians and non-Theresians speak as such. bisag asa makasugat ka. UP, USC, UC, UV, La Salle, Ateneo, etc. taglish, bisaya/english, ilonggo/english, etc.
one may say that it is flagitious for schools (esp the private ones) for them not to allow their students to speak in the dialect, but if you look at it in another point of view, you can acknowledge that it is just part of their training to educate the children.
use of foreign language does not diminish one's sense of patriotism. they use it because they're comfortable with it. they can explain more thoroughly with it. Isagani Cruz could not have said it more thoroughly in his article: "Rizal wrote the "Noli" and the "Fili" in Spanish because he was more comfortable with the language than with his native tongue. He did write his letter to the women of Malolos in Tagalog but needed the editorial assistance of Marcelo del Pilar. Ninoy Aquino was from Tarlac but most of his polemics were in English although, like Rizal, he did not lessen in patriotism because he used a foreign language."
i am proud to be Bisdak, proud to be Pinoy. one cannot say i am unpatriotic because i use the English language. i stand amongst co-Filipinos against those who disrespect our country.

The crux of the problem with our education system as far as languages is concerned is the over-emphasis of Pilipino in the curriculum...for our Bisaya children (especially those that don't watch tagalog soap operas), Pilipino can be a real struggle. I've seen how my kids grapple with Pilipino in their homework for subjects like Hekasi, Rizal, Pilipino... useless study hours which could have been better spent studying science and math and ENGLISH... and that explains why English proficiency has deteriorated in our country and we are now overtaken by Vietnam and other Asian countries.
The issue is- why ban the Bisaya language in our schools?.. while it's okay to speak Tagalog? And why didn't the DECS encourage a curriculum for non-tagalog languages and culture if they are serious in espousing the love of country. this is a slow and subtle form of ethnic cleansing... without us Bisdaks aware of it! Love of country and and a sense of nationhood is pure lipservice if you do not have pride in your ethnicity and culture and language!
National language? that's hypocrisy! The Americans don't speak Cherokee Indian or Apache, the Argentinians speak italian and spanish and look what they've contributed to the world of ballroom dancing- TANGO! Almost the entire south america speak spanish - the mexicans, nicaraguans, guatemalans, costa ricans, etc. yet they have retained their culture and national pride! The Brazilians speak Portuguese and they gave the world their Samba, capoeira, Bossa Nova! Unya kitang mga Pinoy nag hilas hilas man jud ta nga naa kunuhay tay National language, what have we contributed to the world? Japayukis?
And that my friend is the reason why we have remained backwards all these years because of the insistence of our government on a national language policy!

Regarding the teaching of the mother tongues to kids (it's scientifically proven that kids learn better if the first language they are taught is the one they speak at home, then learn a 2nd language after), there are actually some improvements. I heard DECS is piloting a program in Cebu that allows kids to be taught in Cebuano.
That 2nd language would preferrably be English. Right now, I think we can't afford to loose our proficiency in the lingua franca of global business. This is not the time for nationalists to wallow in their isang bansa isang wika fantasies.
Mao. Formal training in the language my ancestors have been speaking for more than a thousand years: Zero.Originally Posted by antoy hilom

But you know (to get back to the topic), I'm really patriotic.
Yes, it's about time! How on earth can you get the child to develop a sense of patriotism and love of country when speaking his/her cradle language is a criminal offense in school!Originally Posted by K
