Thats a crap lens ... try reading the reviews of this lens in http://www.fredmiranda.com .. you'll probably know why.
    I find the 24-70 f2.8L and 70-200 F4 L lens as the best walk-around combo ...
I dont mind bringing an extra lens in the bag ...

Yeah, IS definitely has something to do with it.
Maybe it's the ring USM too.
    ..and probably the 72mm size.

    not really sure dude.
i herd the gold USM is much faster than the Silver USM plus the IS function, mao na ang naka pa mahaal gyud

you might wanna compare the 90-300 / 75-300mm lens with 70-200mm 4L, 2.8L / IS... hehehe... 100mm less max focal length...

my "walk-around" lens is a 80-200 mated with my d200 - great for street shooting here in Cebu...

Got an email from a friend in Singapore who bought a
Tamron SP AF 17-35MM F/2.8-4 Di LD Aspherical (IF)

    His verdict?...
"...I bought the Tamron SP 17-35mm for work (instead of the Canon L lens)
and did some direct comparison by renting the Canon 17-40 L. Man, it is sharp...

...I thought that the center was even sharper than the Canon, but there was
some purple fringing on very bright subjects when wide open in the corners."

    List Price: $817.95
