Good question ts. But i think what you really need to concern yourself is about the facts around you.
1. How does he feel towards the girl(ex)?
2. Do you really know the guy so much already that you know you can trust him?
3. Is the guy the type of person that is weak when it comes to resisting temptations.
4. Will befriending the ex create some insecurities on your part?
5. If you decide not to befriend the ex, will it make you look like you are insecure, that is why you can't trust your guy enough. (this one is very critical,since if the ex senses this, she might use your insecurities against you).

...there are still a lot of facts that you could consider, it's up to you really.

you just have to know how to gather some facts for you to have some basis for your decision,and you just have to know how to weigh the pros and cons of your decision ts.
