Long life and immortality will only be useful for the intelligent and creative. It will be a bane and an unbearable experience to those who lack the proper faculties to appreciate it.

It would be fortunate for us if the intelligent and creative are the ones who benefit from this, because if so then the world in turn would benefit from the fruits of their mind, and yet I believe that these people would rather live a natural life because they have a better understanding of the purpose of their lives. Yet, it is undeniable that the corrupt and greedy will also covet it because they are people who cannot let go of their material bonds and will continue to deteriorate the quality of life around them.

For scientific purposes, it would be a marvelous breakthrough if such a thing is achieved. This would lead to numerous possibilities, especially in the field of medicine and life science. But as with most marvelous breakthroughs, there lies a question of morality - whether this will be used or abused. I'm sorry if I might be veering from the scientific base of the topic, but it is unavoidable to discuss the moral aspects of a topic as broad as immortality and the lengthening of life.

Great insight here. Reminds me of the movie "Bicentennial Man", where an android chooses to be vulnerable and mortal as a human, rather than be an immortal robot.
