you shouldnt do that...if one of the batteries in the series is in bad shape (totally drained) and you force it like that, the other battery cells that may still have a little charge can cause permanent damage to that one (polatiry reversal). that one cell can ultimately cause permanent damage to the device and the other batteries.
1 damage cell can ruin the bunch so dont mix them up. dont mix new batteries with old ones. dont mix batteries with different capacities. so if you determine 1 or more of your batteries are defective, throw those out.
most of the time, when you notice a freshly charge set of batteries goes dead very quickly is caused by 1 or 2 faulty battery in the bunch (not all 4 batteries are damage). most chargers dont have the means to detect these batteries nor can it repair them.
refresh button only discharges the battery before it charges it. a maintenance if you will. one way to use that to repair worn out batteries is do refresh and fullcharge 20times continiously so once its full press the refresh button again.but if battery performance doesnt improve after 20 cycles of this, it needs to be replaced. do this cycle only if battery performce has gone down.
anways i now have the technology to automate repair these worn out batteries back to its maximum capacity (repair them or completely refresh them) or close to it. also have the capability to determine actual capacity of these batteries
when i got this new gadget i proceded to take out my 3 or 4 year old rated 2100 mah that i dont use anymore with my photo gear and subjected them to this new device. i got 1400 to 1800 mah capacity on most of them (this is determined thru a series of test the device does on the battery).after which i attempted to revive them as my other chargers with refresh button couldnt do. most of them were refresh back just under 2100mah capacity. only one stayed at around 1600mah which still keeps my clock running fairly on time
its funny how the eneloop 2000mah batteries i got may-june last year are still above 2000mah capacity without refreashing/conditioning/repair when those 2700mah energizers i got early this year only has 2500 to 2600mah capacity. therefore bili na kayo ng eneloop

if you want me to test (check actual capacity/check damage) your batteries and/or attempt to revive it to its original glory, drop by and see me nalang kin the mean time get nalang kayo ng eneloop...the really great thing about eneloop is that its has extremly low self discharge rate. 15% in one year. other nimh batteries has a self discharge rate of 10% or more in one day
