@ cherub
hello,
please be reminded that im not a photography expert^^.
anyway, if you want that 450d then get it. you wont be too ambitious since learning photography with a good equipment is a plus. just like when i was a table-tennis athlete, the better your racket shall be, the faster you will learn the basics as well as the advance/pro since better equipments give exact quality outputs. its always best to have a great equipment already at start. this sx10 bridge camera is NOT compact, its huge(bulky) & heavy just like a dslr. i choose this over a dslr because i dont need to buy & bring extra different barrel lenses for super macro, wide angle, & super telephoto shots specially when traveling. not to think the costs of these extra barrel lenses which are quite pricey. i can take a shot to different situations in a snap without the need to exchange huge barrel of lenses which is prone also to dust when done. this has all-in-one plus the video capability(although some mid-range dslr now has video already).
if you want a very handy compact then get the sleek/pocket sized point-&-shoot models. if your concern is more on dslr-like capability plus the convenient of not buying/bringing/exchanging big barrel of lenses for different shooting situations then get a bridge/prosumer type like this one. if your aim is to be have a camera with interchangeable huge variety of special and dedicated lenses that produces creative photos then dslr is a go.
its all about preferences, timbang-timbanga lang maam.

aw, oh, nakabasa nako bai nissans. pasabot nimo ang lens filters diay for super macro , telephoto og wide angles. yes, wala ko gagamit, hehe, pasensya na wala ko kasabot dayon. yes, i have read also that flimsy daw since the design is for the sx5(since sx5 has thread if im not mistaken). although in doubt gihapon ko nga ingon ana ka flimsy since foreign owners also complained the sx10's lens hood nga flimsy pod but i find it kopot man og dili basta-basta matangtang. it might be even be used with lens filters if manufacturers will design one soon. even the lens cap, they have complained also that its flimsy, lol!^^ but its not. although it has no string due to it can be clipped to the neck strap.i found also super macro filter users using raynox and have no complains. the only things i am complaining about this camera are the hand grip feels quite plasticy which might be easily break, heaviness, and dslr-type shutter button, wala ko maanad. its flexi lcd is extremely useful specially when doing super macro when awkward/difficult positioning and narrow angles are present. i dont need to force my head to get into the viewfinder to take a shot when the subject is below or too high.
edit:
i think i understand now why foreign owners say that the lens hood is flimsy since the hold is not very strong due to the hood itself is very light. it would be useless for the manufacturer to make it too tight since excessive friction might damaged the high quality plastics. but i assure you that its NOT loose that can be easily fall away. same goes to the lens cap.
