remember Armageddon starring Bruce Willis? They say it was feasible to use a Nuclear Weapon, but the truth is its not. A nuclear explosion will never happen in space, unless you're making a new big-bang theory minus nuclear power.
Quoted in wikipedia:
if ever the torino scale goes away, we can't rely on nuclear weapons. we must think of something different to blow things upThe movie also adheres to standard Hollywood conventions when it comes to science, such as having noise in space. Explosions were also shown to be sustained in the vacuum of space.Ultra Magnetic Satellites? Cryogeddon? Shogun Executioner? Hahaha.

And oh, in case you forgot, the sun (and other stars) is a gigantic nuclear explosion in space.

I also have my doubts that nukes can "whack" Apophis. But, actually, there's no need to smash it to bits. A well-detonated nuke in front, or the side, or even behind the asteroid, can change velocity and vector in so many ways.
For instance, if the nuke were to be detonated in front of its orbital path, Apophis' velocity can be reduced, and thus can lead to a significant change in apoapis/periapsis. If the nuke is detonated sa kilid sa asteroid, then you have inclination or plane change. Provided this explosion occurs beyond the orbit of Jupiter, both types of orbital changes, or combinations thereof, are significant enough negate the possibility of the asteroid coming closer to, and perhaps going back again, near the earth.
