Banaag cited in LA fete
FILIPINO grandmaster, Hari Osias C. Banaag, added another feather to his cap after being awarded by the prestigious USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame as the “Philippine Grandmaster of Sikaran” recently at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
A 10th degree red-belt, Banaag’s rose to martial arts prominence when he established the Sikaran-Arnis Academy in Delano, California, back in 2003, which ultimately expanded the Sikaran globally.
It was the third time for Banaag, president and founder of Global Sikaran Federation and Owner/Proprietor of the Sikaran-Arnis Gym here in the country, to be cited by the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
“Our goal is to promote sikaran and for the Filipino youth to patronize it. This is a homegrown martial arts,” said the 47-year-old Banaag, who was first named by the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame as the “Sole King of Sikaran” in 2004.
On January 5 and 6 Banaag, in coordination with Mayor Joseph Buenaventura of *****g, will hold the 2007 Sikaran World Gold Cup Open Martial Arts Festival at the University of Rizal System in *****g, Rizal.
It was in 1997 when Banaag attended the Martial Arts World Congress in Washington, D.C., as the country’s representative in Sikaran, a Filipino Art of Foot Fighting, where 406 delegates from 106 countries attended the gathering.
Using the opportunity to promote Sikaran, he went to Vallejo, California, after the convention and started teaching the sport. A month later, he moved to Central California in Bakersfield, where he founded the Sikaran-Arnis Academy.
Since then, students at the Sikaran-Arnis have won in various tournaments, including the USA World Championship in Riviera Hotel Casino and the Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

any suggestions for a good training venue for Sikaran?
reading this thread makes me want to join.
can you give me an idea about the differebt kick style of sikaran, like,is there a roundhouse kick,frontal,sidekick,45?
sure fireBYnite...
Sikaran uses a variety of kicks for competition and defence. They also have a variety of roundhouses, side kicks and turnind side kicks. but the trade mark is the biakid ( sickle kick) which resembles a turning long kick using the heel of the foot. the main characteristic of the Sikaran kick is that the body is placed at the level of the kicking leg if the lick is done at mid level and the body is placed lower than the level of the kicking leg for head high kicks. This results in more powerful kicks owing to better placement of kicking foot. most of the Sikaran kicks are very good for closed distance and are done in odd angles. Sikaranistas can easily hit the head even if they are in clinching position.
however, to really have a good grasp of how sikaran kicking is done, one should see a sikaran competition. it may be similar to taekwondo but it has a very distinct characteristic that is uniquely filipino..
