Cebu Archdiocese to propose inter-faith dialog at Asean
Monday, October 02 2006 @ 03:22 PM BST
Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal's liaison officer to the Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit organizing committee wants to establish an inter-faith dialog during the meet.
Fr. Carmelo O. Diola said he is considering asking leaders of the other religions to "come up with a united front" and conduct an inter-religious dialog to express expectations of the regional confab.
Diola said Pope Benedict XVI had called for a "frank and open dialog of culture."
"We intend to awaken spiritual energies because we have a common humanity. Religion has a special role with a specific energy for good," he added.
Diola said there is no set agenda for the Church during the summit, but the: Church of Cebu has always played a visible role in society.
The church has come up with an "Oratio Imperata" for the success of the summit.
It is being said in all parish churches in Cebu at the end of every Mass starting last month.
"We came up with the "Oratio Imperata" because the cardinal is convinced that a lot is at stake, not only peace and order but also the improvement of economies," Diola said.

CPA gets funds for squatter relocation
THE Cebu Port Authority (CPA) is taking the opportunity given by a private firm to relocate squatters in the port area.
Dennis Villamor, CPA deputy general manager, said the agency will allocate some P2 million to P3 million as the agency’s contribution to Cebu City Hall’s move to relocate squatters in the North Reclamation Area (NRA) in preparation for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in December.
Earlier, SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SM) vice president for marketing Marissa Fernan asked City Hall to set aside part of the amount paid by SM for its 2007 taxes for the relocation of illegal settlers and vendors in the vicinity of the mall.

In an interview, CPA’s Villamor said the problem of relocating some 500 squatter-families in the port area has been one of CPA’s concerns.

Skepticism dismays architect, who says CICC is 90% complete
THE Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is 90 percent complete and will be opened for a media tour this Wednesday.
Gov. Gwendolyn Gar-cia, who presided over yesterday’s meeting of the Asean Summit Cebu Organizing Committee because Ambassador Marciano Paynor is out of the country, clarified that the Capitol is not just working on the CICC building but also on its other needs.
Garcia told reporters after the closed-door meeting that CICC architect Manuel Guanzon expressed “frustration” over reports that the center will never be finished.
Guanzon showed the committee members photos during the start of the CICC’s construction and what the builders have accomplished so far.
“I can understand his frustration. Several teams are working 24 hours, we are dealing with a million and one things at a time, this is no normal endeavor,” the governor said.
The CICC is the main venue of the Asean summit in December, which will gather the 10 heads of the state of the Southeast Asian region and their dialogue partners from Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

DECEMBER ASEAN SUMMIT A TERROR TARGET
A specialist on terrorist groups in The Philippines has warned.. South East Asia's next major attack may take place at the ASEAN summit in the central Philippines in December.
Dr Kit Collier has extensively researched a movement called Rajah Solaiman, a group of former Christians who've become alienated from society and converted to radical Islam.
He's currently in the southern Philippines investigating victims of terrorist bombings for Human Rights Watch.
Dr Collier says the Islamist group poses a serious and present danger, helped by its close association with better known groups, the Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiah.
He told Caroline Davey that Rajah Solaiman has the advantage that it's less conspicuous to authorities trying to monitor the movement's activities.

Osmena proposes semestral break till January
Osmena proposes semestral break till Jan. to clear Cebu for Asean Summit
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena has proposed the extension of the semestral break in Cebu schools until January to decongest the city during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit (Asean) in December.
Osmena said he would support such a plan if parents and students are amenable to it.
If the plan pushes through, the semestral break will start in late October this year and end in December. But since Christmas break also falls around this time, the break would be further extended until after the holidays.
Dr. Carolino Mordeno, Department of Education regional director, who is amenable to the idea, however, said that students still need to comply with the required 205 school days a year.
This could mean extending classes until April.
The proposal, he said, would also need approval form the national office.

In an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, Bedia said the layout of the rooms will be left to the discretion of the companies.
The companies will be pulling out the furniture from their respective showrooms, while others will be manufacturing some of its designs.
Bedia said the designs will be more “generic, simple, yet professional.”
The furniture will include some three-sitter chairs, two big chairs, tables and a coffee stand, among others.

Media inspects CICC construction progress
Cebu City (4 October) -- Cebu media were treated to an ocular inspection on the progress of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) construction by main architect Manuel Guanzon this morning at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.
Guanzon in a briefing to reporters and photographers said pictures taken at the site must be published the next day so as to provide the public the real score on the actual accomplishment of the ongoing building of the edifice.
More or less 750 workers are working round the clock or 24 hours a day, seven days a week in two shifts just to be able to finish the international center on its target completion date on November 15, according to Guanzon.
Guanzon explained that all materials in building the structure are pre-fabricated so what one may see today may have a huge difference three days later. The total pre-fabricated structure of the CICC took us two months where the use of structural steel is faster unlike the conventional way which takes longer due to curing time, he added.
Full blast on the construction work started middle of August although work has began even in June. The delay was caused by the late arrival of the 2.8M kilograms of steel that came in only late July, this was said.
Currently, accomplishment percentage of the CICC is 90 percent complete, said the CICC architect.
By next week, the escalator and elevators will be installed as workers are smoothing cement for tile flooring on the plenary hall located at the 2nd floor of the international center. The theater type hall can accommodate 1,000 seats, Gunazon bared.
The international media center (IMC) also located at the 2nd floor is almost done as workers put on the composite panel for the walling as well as the finishing touches. The IMC will be divided into a working area and a press conference area. About 2,500 foreign media are expected to attend and more than 300 from the Philippine press, this was disclosed earlier by 12th Asean Summit National Organizing Committee (NOC) - Media and Communications Secretariat Head Milton Alingod.
By October 30, the Radio TV Malacañang will install the wiring and cables and other necessary broadcast equipment for the IMC. Imported air conditioning units are on standby at the site ready for installation as air conditioning of the CICC is highly centralized, Guanzon further added.
The P450-M CICC equipped with a helipad has three floors categorized as lower ground floor, upper ground floor and the second floor. The lower ground floor will be used for the VIP parking, it was disclosed.
The total land area of the CICC is 3.8 hectares but the structure itself is about 25,000 sq. m. and the actual floor area of the center is 7,000 sq. meters, Guanzon said. (PIA-Cebu/FCR)

PGMA's faith in Cebuanos a deciding factor to host Asean Summit
Cebu City (4 October) -- Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia stressed President Arroyo chose Cebu as the venue of the 12th Asean Summit because she has total faith in the Cebuanos that we could pull off a successful hosting of the biggest international event of the country.
Garcia who arrived this morning as the media had a tour and briefing on the actual progress of the CICC construction said "we are pushing ourselves to the limits" to finish the CICC right on schedule and we will deliver as what the President expects, the governor promised.
The President did not choose Cebu for the Asean venue because of the infrastructure as Cebu cannot compete with Manila in terms of infrastructure. President Arroyo selected Cebu because she entirely believes in the Cebuanos and we should not fail her, according to Garcia.
The governor told the press that pictures taken today ought to be published the next day as not to mislead the public that the construction of the P450-M CICC will not be completed on time.
