    Default Film making anyone?

i dunno what a swingset is in this Naruto thing

but from what i know, a swingset is where a crew wants to film, say the little gap underneath a door (but actually a LOT of the door is trimmed off)

or the banister of a stairwell has been removed to make for more flexible camera manuevers (like cranes, etc)

or pillars being removed from a certain part of a house, for the same reason (flexibility)

but i can't really be too sure.
    i'm no expert.

well, i realize that it might marr the shot if u photgraph impressionistic paintings from even a slightly low angle....... and it might defeat the purpose of the impressionistic artist if its filmed that way

and i realize that if a director lends u a cam to do whatever you want with it; and then if u intend to take itty bitty pieces of establishing shots impromptu-style, u have to study detail of the areas you intend to photgraph or u might make an ass out of yourself and waste the tape (especially if u dnt knw how to delete previous footage from the certain kind of cam handed to you) ..... i know i made an ass out of myself once

    Homey, AA ka?

Watch GRAPES: A LOVE STORY and THE MAKING OF A CATCH PHRASE for films that don't require actors and the other one was made without the maker even ever having to shoot principals! Or animate something raw... he just did a little "tweaking" LoL

GRAPES is all VO'd...... but i'm not sure if its a good thing. was it a movie or a mocumentary?? but since it was almost "plotless" and they didn't hafta put any actors in, i suppose VO's woulda been excused........

but the best movies to me are the ones that are silent, diba? TOTALLY silent, with only music to get 'ya in the mood.

(special tnx to Jomark by da way for introdcing me to that site)

why are Vo's such a bad thing?

    Default Film making anyone?

If they make the movie redundant, its a bad thing.

The rule is, VO's are a tool, but make sure that the movie is good enough to stand alone WITHOUT those VO's.

VO's add an additional layer to the story.... they can be like the protag's commentary. VO's have to be fcking funny if possible. If you can't put icing on cake, then u might as well NOT put VO's in the story.

another rule is that VO's must NOT be used to patch up plot holes. cuz that's "cheating" in the craft of s.p. writing

if you check out da site i posted above, theer's this short called PARANOIA X.... that, imho is a bad example of the use of VO's! the movie could have lived without dialogue or VO's of any kind!!! imho, the makers of that were naive.

well, i musta went too far when i said it coulda lived as a silent. but the VO's definitely made the film feel redundant.

a good example of the use of VO is AMERICAN BEAUTY. without the vo's, we still would get the story. and no plot holes were patched up by it..... but there's an additional layer, its funnier and its Lester Burnham's commentary on the film he's on. plus there's some nice input of Lester on detail via the vo's: the tweasers and his wife's apron.

EDIT: But documentaries or mockumentaries are ok. cuz they need a narrator...... cuz documentaries are educational, and they practically have no plot to orient the viewer with what its trying to convey. so since its plotless, it doesn't matter. you can VO your heart out if ur making a docu or a mocku special.

e.g. like GRAPES: A LOVE STORY in UnderGroundfilm.org...... i take it must be a mocumentary and not really a "movie-movie" kind of a movie .....
