Method

Step 1. Drill 3/4" hole around the barrel cover and in the middle 3" Hole for the 3inch PVC pipe.
Cut the cover slowly from the barrel. The cover will serve as the base of the filter medias.

Step 2. Cut the 3inch sanitary PVC pipe at a length of 4ft. At the base of the pipe, create a jagged
edge for the water to come out from above. Then fit it to the 3inch hole of the barrel cover.
This serve as the inlet of pond water.

Step 3. Using the coke litro crate, cut it into half. Then cut all the dividers inside the crate.
It is place at the below the cover. This crate serves as the foundation of the filter barrel cover and filter medias.

Step 4. Creating a drain at the bottom of the barrel. Using the power drill and hole
saw, create a hole using the 1inch male adaptor as guide in drilling the hole. Then
tighten the 1inch male and female. Seal the sides with vulcaseal generously.

Step 5. Using the the power drill, drill a 2inch hole at the 4inch below from the top of
the barrel filter. Perfect fit the 2nch sanitary pvc pipe. Seal the sides thoroughly with
vulcaseal generously. This serves as an outlet of filtered water to the main pond.

Step 6. Place the coke crates, barrel cover, and 3inch pvc inside the barrel. Then using
a net, place and arrange it on the top of the drilled barrel cover especially at the side.
This net will prevent the crashed gravel stones from falling at the bottom of the of the barrel.

Step 7. Drill a 1 inch hole to the 3inch sanitary pipe using the power drill and holesaw.
Fit the 1 inch blue pvc pipe, seal it with vulcaseal thoroughly. This serves as an inlet of
pond water to the barrel filter.

Step 8. Place the barrel to its desired location where you want your filter to be setup.
Then slowly add the crashed gravel inside the barrel filter. Take note to arrange the net on
the sides to prevent crashed gravel to fall to the bottom of the barrel... Now you are ready
to start up the filter system...
Take note: Backwash the gravel first before testing it to prevent unwanted solid particles
to mess up our pond.

Step 9. Using the Japanese Mat, cut it in order to make a cartridge as shown above.
The purpose of the Japanese Mat is for biological filtration - transform toxic waste
such as ammonia and nitrite to less toxic nitrate by the good resident bacteria.

Step 10. For the finishing touches, add water plants in between Japanese Mat cartridge.
Purpose of this water plants absorb nitrate from the pond water, contribute to the
oxygen saturation of the pond, and give natural food plant protein to the kois...
Our Finish Product "DIY Barrel Filtration System!"

Take note: During the operation of your Barrel Filter, you will observe bubbles coming out from bottom and up the gravel. Don't be alarmed that is normal! This barrel filtration system is a biological nature indeed... The aeration from the bottom all the way up the Japanese mat will help the good bacteria to cultivate and multiply fast. Making your barrel filter efficient!
Barrel Filter Care:
1. Drain the unwanted waste daily.
2. Backwash the barrel filter every 3-6month
3. Check for leakage everyday especially on the pipes. Nobody is perfect!
There you have it my dear Koi Enthusiasts!!!
