Thus the golden rule....NEVER order spaghetti on your first date!

For napkin etiquette..during formal dinners with several courses they usually give you a large napkin and normally ppl dont open it
all the way, leaving one fold only but this is to keep the napkin from slipping (practical lang) and since its a big napkin then it covers all
your lap. when to unfold it? when the host does. host always goes first. except for buffet when you unfold when you start eating.
if its a small napkin, unfold all the way. make sure to cover your lap.

@streetcar, on the contrary...personally i think americans are not very picky and they have tried to revolutionize fine dining into casual semi-fine dining.
its the europeans i get worried about...but then again, they say..its the food and the company that counts. so i get even more worried
in the company of Filipinos who can eat fine dining kay hehehe you know us..mga himantayon hehehe

^^ different strokes for different folks...sakto sad ka tols....mao na nga kon naa sad ta sa Japan we should also try to find out unsa sad ang particular things nga bad manners for them...kay i-slurp man nila ang soup..the more sound you make the more polite man for them....which is taboo sa western etiquette....para nako self confidence man lang ni....kon confident ka maka diskarte man ka...and dili na mo matter ang small mistakes....kanang self conscious and TH kaayo mao nang palpak na hinuon....

Bitaw...for as long as you are not offensive when eating and dili nimo pakauwawan ang uban tao, including yourself then its fine.

I have a funny story about Japanese dining...a friend was dining with some visitors from Japan and they had with them a caucasian.
It was really funny when the American (who wasnt very familiar with Japanese culture) got his chopsticks and stuck it to a bowl of rice!
Making the sticks stand....imagine how shocked & scared the Japanese were! because for them, its a sign of death in the family. Thats why they never let their chopsticks stand, always pahigda.

And another superstition...Dili balihon ang isda when you have finished one side. I forgot why this is so? Can anyone remember?

Fine dining lessons man kaha so you get fine answers too! lol bitaw for me, i only apply fine dining lessons when i am in a fine resto with top execs wherein you can see naman kung unsa ang place settings nila. there you can apply. but in our daily life, are you kidding me? dad-on gani nako ang kaldero sa fine dining table. so who cares inside my home or with friends how we should eat basta ang importante when time comes that you have to apply fine dining lessons kabalo sab ka. Reserve na lang nang fine dining lessons when you eat with the President.

nah, bogo gud ko anang lessons of fine dining. For my whole life mura'g kaduha ra siguro ko naka experience ug fine dining. Mag observe raman ko sa akong mga tapad ug lingkod, pero maayo gud nang naa tay kaugalingon nga knowledge para di ta ma wani, have confidence nga di ta ma out of place.

Ha ha ha nahinumdom ko ana nga story "ma gi-bali na ma" However diri sa italy ang waiter man mo-prepare sa isda, let's say you ordered grilled fish, when it's cooked the waiter show the whole fish to you or to your company, and he proceeds taking out the skin and fishbones in front of you in a separate table using fork and spoon, so i-serve niya kada usa ka tawo ready to eat na.
This table manners story reminds me the movie "pretty woman", kataw-anan kaayo si julia roberts nag-away ug ang escargot "slippery little suckers" kuno.
Ang ako i-add sa nga suggestions, never start eating unless everybody is seated, ug i-minimize ang ting-ting epek sa fork and knife didto sa plate, and in most cases you can notice that toothpicks are not present in the table near salt pepper and other dressings, you must ask them to the waiter, ggggrrr usahay makalagot especially when you badly need it.!

Agree, you learn just by observing or even asking imong tapad if you are comfortable enough to ask. Usahay kataw-anan pa na imong mga experience handling spoons, knives, butter knives, steak knives, forks small and big, plates nga doble doble kung unsa ang para sa asa, etc. I simply learned fine dining that way. Dili man sab ma apply na everyday but at least dili na ta kaayo ignorante in case lang imong party adtuan requires fine dining.
