Basing on Cebu's performance last year. 2010 has re-invigorated Cebu's economy and now 2011 will witness the second phase of CEBOOM. This time it will be the BPO, Tourism and Real Estate that will fuel the boom for more years to follow. Cebu has entered a point of no return, we are growing at a rate that far surpasses the national average.

    BPO Sector:

With more than 40,000 people employed in the call center industry and thousands more hired and will be hired this year. With this, Cebu has a consumer market far bigger than any City outside NCR. With Cebu having been declared as the World's #9 Emerged/Established BPO City in the world, we have surpassed other global cities with the likes of Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, London, Paris, New York, Hongkong and even Singapore. Cebu City is one of the only 2 Philippine cities that entered the top ten along with Metro Manila. Davao City is far behind our heels at # 69. This achievement has placed Cebu on the radar screens of the world's largest BPO companies especially those from India who have already declared plans of expanding their presence into Cebu. We are set to go higher on the top 10 as Cebu continues to edge out other major cities in the world. The BPO will grow at one of the fastest pace ever seen in the world economy and the Philippines with Cebu will ride that wave of growth to eventually gaining the topmost spot in the outsourcing industry. We will be expecting more big ticket BPO Companies opening up offices in Cebu this year.

    Tourism:

For the last few years Cebu became the Philippines' Premiere Tourist Destination. We have been the 3rd Best Island Destinations in Asia. We have one of the highest tourist arrivals in the country more than DMIA. Tourism will continue to become our niche this year as Cebu has been included in the "Open Skies" policy of the government which will bring in more foreign airlines and of course more foreign tourists to the island. More hotels will open this year and more 5 star hotels will be built within the city. The international brand Radisson Blu has already entered the Cebu market and further concretes our position as the premiere leisure and fun area of the country. And as a result, more hotels and resorts will mean more jobs for Cebuanos.

    Real Estate:

2010 has been a very robust year for the real estate sector in Cebu. Investments have been no less than 9 Billion pesos in the whole year alone. Condominiums and other types of residential estates have risen within the Metro. Cebu City alone was flooded with condominiums that broke ground last year. 2010 has seen Cebu get the attention of the Philippines largest real estate developers. We have seen the entry of Filinvest with Grand Cenia, One Oasis and the Citta di Mare which is set to rise on SRP; Ayala Conglomerate with the brands Ayala Premiere, Alveo and Avida which broke ground that year. Also, SM Prime was not left behind with the opening of Radisson Blu Hotel and their 30 hectare development area vis-a-vis with Filinvest in the SRP. Filinvest pledged investments of at least 25 Billion and SM a sparkling 20 Billion for their SRP projects. Ayala pledged to bring in at least 2 Billion worth of investments annually. These developments are no puny construction thing.

In 2010 we also saw the rise of local Cebuano developers that stood up to the challenge and built their strong foothold in their hometown. Companies like Aboitizland, Apple One, Innoland, Fuente Triangle Realty Corporation and even the well known Filinvest's Gotianun which finds their roots in Cebu.

In 2011, we will see the rise of the retail family of the Gaisanos as they are now building Cebu's tallest skyscrapers with a 2 Tower development which are 60 Flrs and 52 Flrs respectively. Also, the Kings could possibly venture again.

In all, the year 2011 will be a year of growth. Another chapter for Ceboom. SM will start the year by groundbreaking their project in SRP called "The Nautilus" which will have one of the world's top 10 largest malls in the influence of the shape of a nautilus shell. It will be the only SM mall that will be aesthetically grandeur than other SM malls. The circular shape is the first from their usual boxy type malls and the water features will be big! Around it will be a convention center, BPO buildings and Residential Condominiums. Filinvest has already started it's "Citta di Mare" project in SRP which will compliment the SM. Citta di Mare will become a city within a city patterned after affluent coastal towns in Italy. Ayala will be starting the Phase 2B expansion of Ayala Center Cebu which will being in more high end brands to Cebuanos. Also, Avida Towers, Sedona Parc and 1016 Residences will commence construction.

Cebu is gonna grow at an astonishing rate this year. In response to some of the comments here, I don't believe Mayor Mike can do nothing in his term. He has initiated good projects for his administration. The beautification of Fuente Osmena and Plaza Independencia will have long term effects to consolidate the tourism advantage of Cebu with more beautiful landmarks and places of leisure we will be bringing more to Cebu's tourist menu. The clearing of the sidewalks will help the pedestrians move without obstruction. The revitalization of the Downtown Colon will make it more viable as a tourist destination. The improvement of the services of CCMC will benefit the Cebu City patients. He has also repaired neglected major roads by the last Admin. He will transform Cebu from just an ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE to become the Philippines' MOST LIVABLE CITY. As I repeatedly say, Mike has brought in the developments that were not done by the previous one. He has delivered what is due to the Cebuano people; better roads, more beautiful places to go and better healthcare with the CCMC. Osmena gave Cebu SRP at the expense of the CCMC and the roads of the City and now the Mayor is giving what is due to us. For sure, he will make Cebu achieve more cornerstones in it's history over the next years and I believe in what change he can do for the City. DEVELOPMENT IS NOT JUST ABOUT NUMBERS BUT IT'S ALSO ABOUT THE SERVICES YOU GET, THE ROADS YOU PASS THROUGH and the PARKS YOU ENJOY TO SEE. Most of all it is about the improvement on the quality of living we get that is most important.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cebu's roads are fit only for horse-drawn carriages, that's a fact and one sad this is that it will be near to impossible to widen these roads because almost every corner is occupied by the building and we don't wanna destroy our heritage buildings because of that. Cebu is an old City, way to old! Mass Transport System? Cebu will be implementing the BRT in 2013 to replace the congestion triggering jeepneys. And soon enough an underground light rail system. Also a third connection from Cebu City to Mactan either via the third Cebu - Mactan Bridge or an undersea tunnel from SRP. The planned Cebu Trans - Axial Highway which traverse through Cebu's mountains and provide more comfortable trips to motorists going out of the City. Expect also within this decade the construction of MCIA Terminal 2 and the proposed Cebu Megaport.

Let's just wait and see if these projects come into fruition.

Layo ra kaau nang acheivements ni Gordon kang Tomas. He's not responsible to what Subic has become. Diha na daan ang Subic property when he became a mayor there.
