Default Autodesk, who owns Discrete, author of 3dsMax, just acquired Alias, maker of May

I believe the particle effects for "Perfect Storm" was programmed as a proprietary plug-in for Maya by Habib Zagarpour, who then worked for Industrial Light and Magic. He now works for EA Games, makers of Need for Speed series. This could be a good testament to how powerful and flexible Maya is compared to Max, which excels only in games at most. If you are a Warcraft III player, and have taken time to marvel at the stunning details of its cinematics. Well, that's Max for you.

In the end. It isn't the tool that matters, but the talent that drives the pen.

Recently, I just heard from a friend from Booom that Autodesk, who owns Discrete, author of 3dsMax, just acquired Alias, maker of Maya. link: http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/10/04/alias/index.php This same person uses Lightwave3D as his 3D tool, which you might like to consider. Lightwave excels in movies as well, but is less celebrated compared to Max. link: http://www.newtek.com

It would be a good idea to wait around and see what happens to Maya before taking the big leap at purchasing either of the two 3D softwares.
