and unsay requirements to play hd dvd and bluray disc? do we need a new dvd drive for this or codec lang?
@IT: yup, XP will do just fine... but if you want audio/video streams direct to your TV, Media Center is the way to go c",) am using 64-bit vista ultimate and it has WMC
@muzikfreakah: even the x850xt is great (tried it also using component video) sir c",) nindot na kaayo ang hd3870. i want to get one myself but i've decided i'll stick to my 8800gt for some time. btw, you know where i can get a hd/blu-ray drive? murag mahal man gud kung palit pa ko ug player (~40t+ daw when it gets here). ps3 unta to pero hapit mugawas akong mata pag kita nako sa price didto sa ayala dept store... 61t+!! with this amount, daghan na ko mapalit... maayo kay you have the dvi-to-hdmi converter... you won't be getting any audio at the hdmi end though. btw, let us know if its really better than component video cables.
@Michbern: yup, he will only get video signals from the video card (unless manufacturers find a way to route audio signals from the card to the dvi connector. audio signals will come from either the on-board audio connectors (digital via coax or spdif, or analog via audio jacks). to play hd or blu-ray discs, one needs a drive that can play hd or blu-ray (some drives can play both formats). the general public is still waiting for what format gets standardised (we are in a situation similar to the one when betamax and vhs were battling which gets to become the standard). PCX has a samsung blu-ray drive on its price list... 10t+...
thanks for the info sirOriginally Posted by blade4638

@blade4638: This for me is the best drive for us HTPC users. LG GGW-H10NI Super Multi Blue BD optical. It supports Playing and Burning Bluray and Playing HD also. Problem here is our digital out (optical or coaxial) wont work anymore, kailangan HDMI gyud (I think ha) so Our best bet is really to get the ATI HD3870 which supports audio out 5.1 channel via the DVI-HDMI adapter ;-D Sweet really. But this would also mean that we need to get a new AVR with HDMI support.
@michbern: The DVI-HDMI adapter I got doesnt support audio out via HDMI. So, you will need to get a new ATI video card which supports it. All NVIDIA cards do not support Audio out via HDMI BUT there are some manufacturers like Asus who made a digital audio in on the video card,so you plug your Digital out of your soundcard or motherboard, into the digital in of the Video card which then allows you to have audio on your HDMI, BUT this is really manufacturer dependent. Still the way to go is really ATI for HTPC.
E guys, heres a good addition to your HTPC if you dont have one yet.
There are three models
Mblast- this comes with auto fan controller, Remote and VFD display.
Mplay 202- Same as blast without fan controller
Mplay Mini - Remote and receiver only.
@muzikfreakah: how much for the dvi-hdmi cable?
I ordered them from canada through my bro who is here on vacation

unsay pinaka best player/software ninyo na try na tin-aw kaayo playing dvd's?
For DVDs I just use windows Media Player. Power DVD is also good.
there's also something to remember for those with older video cards (those _not_ hdcp certified), who want to play hd/blu-ray discs via their hd/blu-ray drives and watch in their lcd tvs...
to be able to play at full-HD resolution, you need your video card and display to be hdcp certified. otherwise, you wont be able to play at full-HD. you can however watch movies at lower resolutions. others have reported blank screens after they attempted to watch at full-HD resolutions.
NOTE: i've read about this content protection scheme having been hacked already c",)
