I did a quick search on Gateways's website for XP drivers on your machine and they listed none. They just have Vista drivers. So installing XP on that laptop is the easy part, it's getting the hardware to work under XP is the bigger task. You'll just have to hope really that after getting XP to install on the machine, Windows can provide some basic drivers for your hardware, otherwise you'll find that some things like the wireless adapter, LAN, modem, won't be working properly.
You can always try contacting Gateway and ask if they have XP drivers for your machine, or do some Googling yourself and check if there are others users out there who is in the same situation as you but manage to do some workarounds for the same Gateway machine under XP.
