SQL is the language. MySQL is the app.

SQL is important if you are developing business applications and *MUST* be learned.
Almost all professional RDBMS servers uses SQL to retrieve and update its data.

Not quite, most of the business logic in professional ERP are programmed in SQL as stored procedures. Triggers can be also equated to event-driven programming. But most web CMS and apps are only using SQL as data storage and retrieval only and not using it as its full potential.

It depends what your goal is.
If it is for personal use, whatever meet your criteria.
If it is for commercial use, whatever allow you to finish projects as quick as possible (quicker means quicker money too...).
For personal use, I write in Assembler and C/C++, for commercial use, I write in Delphi.
