I disagree that he's a copycat. Even Blaine's material was ages in the literature of the performing art but his arena of close-up magic was new... normally, bombastic presentations of platform tricks were done on the street, then Blaine toned it down and took magic that's usually done in the confines of a studio setting to the harsh streets.

Well, Mana might have some of that "Blainyness", his mentalism and paranormal genre of his tricks have a different feel, usually Filipino performers get to be very "geeky" and flashy and don't have any class in them.

But again, I wished more first-class STAGE or GRAND ILLUSION can be produced by Filipino magicians as well... I miss that kind of magic.

Correct. Yes it is in the PERFORMANCE and in the atmosphere that is created where the real magic is... It's also the showmanship of the performer that creates the ultimate effect.

Everything he did is fake... it's ILLUSION, it's used to entertain, to symbolize and as a metaphor... But unlike con artists, magicians are entertainers they don't earn money from people to dupe them into thinking they can do something they really can't... But in the premise that everything is an illusion, for theater's sake the performer can feel free to use esoteric explanations or paranormal overtones in his patter to enhance the effect...

I am a magician/mentalist myself, and I must say that Erik Mana is not a copycat.

If you think he is copying David Blaine, he is not.

Even so, David Blaine is also performing magic that has been long ago created.

Think about a magic trick as a song. There is a composer ( magic creators - those who create and engineer the illusions done by magicians. These creator are those who most likely non-magicians dont know about.), and performers ( magicians that are making a living - this includes David Blaine, Erik Mana, David Copperfield, Criss Angel...you name it.)...And there are also magic creators that are performers also, like Rannie Raymundo, a name that most of us surely recognize. Yes, he is a professional magician, too!

In this case, Erik Mana and David Blaine are performers, not magic creators.

You can liken the magicians as singers singing a song composed by someone else.

Here is an example so that we can understand it better:

You know a lot of musicians/bands that sing the song Knocking on Heaven's Door: Avril Lavigne, Guns n' Roses, and even Parokya ni Edgar's "Nanakaw ang Wallet Ko", to name a few, not to include local bands and performers. You can see the difference of their renditions. And you can see the mediocre performers. Karaoke performers. BUT they all sing the same song. A song composed by Bob Dylan. Same happens in magic. Some are creative in their presentations of such illusions, and some you can liken to the people that sing like karaoke. "Mediocre magicians". Its just that only minority of people can spot or appreciate the difference between the renditions, because the majority dont know that magic is a performance art, just like singing, dancing, and what else. Its just a very unique performance art though. Aside from the fact that our performance art relies somewhat on secrets, we are also unique in ways that maybe only a magician/mentalist can FULLY see and understand.

It should be understood that magic is a performance art, but only few people see it that way. So karon, you know better na.

Trivia: Do you know that one of David Copperfield's magic consultants is a Filipino? His name is Homer Liwag and is a very creative magic creator. I just want to let you know about this because I want people to know that we got incredible Filipino talents in the backgrounds and in the backstage of the art of magic.

(Anxiously waiting for another Erik Mana special... ...And probably a Rannie Raymundo magic special...He is great, too! Watch his videos in YouTube...He is way better than Erik Mana in my opinion. Take it from a magician. )
