Default Manila Standard's Malu Fernandez unpleasant article of OFW's

Malu Fernandez, Manila Standard Today, Bigotry In The Media
Written on August 16th, 2007 by nick | Posted in Social Concerns |

With the recent irresponsible, elitist, bigoted, and discriminating comments made by Manila Standard Today columnist Marlu Fernandez in her People Asia magazine article “From Boracay to Greece” in which she makes many belittling comments about Overseas Filipino Workers and Filipinos in general, the response from Filipino bloggers have been overwhelming, and have not been light on the criticism. When do we say enough is enough and that we will no longer stand for the bigotry and discrimination that takes place, not only in this country but all around the world?

For her part, in her “apology”, Malu Fernandez addressed the emails responding to her article. However, the apology, was nothing more than another attempt to take a jab at Filipinos and to once again assert that she’s an elite that those in lower socioeconomic classes just fail to understand or comprehend her “wit”.

if she's targeting to please a 'certain audience' then she also pissed the rest of what she did not target...hahaha

[color=navy]Being a writer myself, I am hesitant to comment on the works of other writers-- but I find that Malou Fernandez is not a writer. She has shown no respect for language, carelessness and callousness with her words and no consideration for the readers.

Ursula K. Le Guin, multi-awarded American author, philosopher and poet, said that "A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls...
And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper."

Based on that definition, Miss Fernandez fails. If she did possess a grain of humanity in her (as true writers are known to hold kilos), she wouldn't have written that response with such arrogance and vanity. I would like to imply she isn't really that human at all, and probably lacks that inner light called a soul.

Am I implying Malou Fernandez is barely human? Perhaps I am, but what is clear to me is she isn't much of a writer.

She's just too insecure and tries to hit back by being someone "superior" or being an "elite". A typical defense mechanism.
