For self defense, maybe you could try judo. Judo is closlely related to jiu-jitsu but it focuses more on throws. Naa pud gamay grappling. Nice pud pang fitness lang...

give j-tech31 a chance to really understand what his goals are in getting into martial arts practice so that he will not be frustrated later on. there are many many motivations one can have in getting into martial arts practice. self defence, fitness, inner peace, character development, sports excellence... etc. let us guide him to really understand what his motivations are instead of diving into the endless debate of which art is better. and by the way, let us differentiate Martial Art from SDS ( self defence systems). martial arts are forms of fighting heavily rooted on tradition and which have become cultural extensions from its land of origin. code of ethics are heavily emphasized, although some have sporting applications ( ex. Taekwondo, Karatedo, Pencak Silat, Sikaran-Arnis, Vietvodao, Aikido, Judo, Jujitsu.. etc). SDS are strictly for real life self defence. Code of ethics and tradition arent given emphasis ( ex. CDT, Krav Maga etc).
So, j-tech31, consider your options, understand your goals and then make your choice. we are always here to help you no matter what your purpose are. but just a word of advice, please spend considerable time learning the art that you chose. martial arts takes a life time to master. its not like riding your plain old bike. DO NOT WINDOWSHOP ( like moving to various arts without gaining good understanding and without spending considerable time). Fruit salad resulta ana.Ill tell you, you will discover lots of good things about a certain art when u have spend considerable time in it.

yup! in the real world.. there are no Gi's to grab on.. there are no Sticks to wield, there are no groin protectors. no gloves, no ring. no points. no referee, no "ready stance (sucker punch nuon), no stretching, no warm ups, heheheh.

Korek, but the possibilities are endless... unless imong kontra lima kabook! Dagan na lang! One thing naay advantage ang eskrima is that "weapon(s) are great equalizer". I would rather fight on 2 or 3 assailants with knife on my hand or a single stick because managana ang mga assailants... unless naa silay dala pud then the practitioner still have the advantage. Ug ang assailants experts pud... dagan na lang.

Agree! There is no choreographed fighting in real world of fighting. But, you can not use your talents unless you start a fight... dili man tingali ta by nature mangita ug awai. So, the best possible way to learn fighting and defending is in the school. There is physiological and psychological values when you train inside the school... not all the time imong training partners work the same way everyday... unless ang instructor say so... but for my students, I always ask them to practice undirected moves not like cavemen fighting but with finess and techniques aron naa silay ideas how to move and create moves with their own understanding.
:mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

some tips in choosing a martial arts school (beginners):
--reason of joining a martial arts club: it usually falls under 3 categories. mostly self-defense and some are sports and fitness
--do some research about different forms of martial arts disciplines and pick the one the really interests you
--check the availability of schools
--observe: not just the school and discipline, but also the instructor. instructor plays a very big part in your training. (better credentials doesn't really mean better instructor. instead of counting how many medals the instructor have won, better count how many of his/her students have won medals)
--know your physical limitations
--get feedbacks: about the martial art in general, about the schools, about the instructors

to all martial arts practitioners, regardless of any kind:
let us post the address of martial arts schools/dojos in this thread. we could make this some sort of martial arts directory. this could be a big help for those people looking for some place to learn martial arts. and maybe we could also post the schedules of upcoming tournaments and events of any martial arts disciplines.
let me start:

doce pares gym: arnis/kali/eskrima, aikido, karate, brazilian jiu-jitsu
