TIPS:

• Learn about light characteristics: direction, soft vs hard, and color temperatures
• Learn about the "stop"... the unit of measurement we use in photography
• Learn about aperture, shutterspeed, and film speed (aka ISO) and how they relate to each other
• Learn how each autoexposure and program mode uses aperture, shutterspeed, and film speed
• Learn how autoexposure works and why the meter shouldn't always land in the middle
• Learn the f16 sunny day rule
• Learn how to balance exposure in Manual mode (hint: 1 stop up equals 1 stop down)
• Learn exposure... practice it... drill it in so that it becomes second nature
• Learn how to focus properly and about depth of field
• Learn about focal distance and how that plus camera to subject distance can change the whole perspective
• Try not to put every subject in the damn center
• Find out what the other buttons and settings on your camera does and when you should use them
• Saying your breaking the rules of photography is not an excuse for not learning them in the first place

Might be joining you guys soon. Kinda tired of lugging around heavy cameras and looking to buy something smaller and lighter

My first digital camera, the Sony F717, had the same fly-by-wire focus ring as well as silent zoom and focusing as the new Canon STM lenses. And that Sony focus ring could also be used for zoom control at the flick of a switch. I've used this camera for magazine covers, billboards, and numerous commercial shoots.

Now trying out the new Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS for its silent focusing and fly-by-wire control... which was a lot like the Sony F717 that I started off with ...am I going in circles then?

Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical?...

Funny that I haven't heard of it until now. Though it seems it came out after I bought the Sigma 17-70 so stopped actually shopping around for lenses.

But reading the reviews it looks to be a very good lens...

Fulltime 2.8... good range for people pictures... very sharp. But I'd miss out on being able to shoot wide. Well, can't have everything in just one lens.

I'd go for it then pair it off with something wide angle... nice price too
