BIG FOREIGN banks UBS and JP Morgan have reversed their bullish outlook on the Philippines, lamenting that the much-lauded progress in the government's fiscal dynamics could fizzle out amid the political turbulence.

In separate reports dated July 13, the two banks said that even if President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo were removed from office, Vice President Noli de Castro might be unable to carry out tough economic reforms, thus narrowing the country's options down to a possible constitutional change.

"The bottomline is whether Arroyo stays or goes, in the current situation it will be very difficult for Philippine markets to perform well, at least in the near term," UBS economist for Southeast Asia Christa Janjie said.

JP Morgan analyst Sin Beng Ong said: "What is clear is that the fiscal outlook for the Philippines has taken for the worse with the recent political uncertainty."

uprooting the economic problems and stabling it entails more than replacing/maintaining the personalities of the reactionary state.. overthrowing of the ruling oppressive and exploitative social system might do it perhaps.. perhaps, this can be achieved by establishing a people's democratic government to replace the reactionary state of pro-imperialist, a government of workers, peasants and other patriotic classes, shall stand for national sovereignty and democracy, carry out genuine reforms and pursue the path of economic development..

mostly i observed constant rise in the prices of food and other basic commodities.. through government edict (daw), the prices of electricity and water have increased and will be expected to continue eventually.. (if the former statement is true) it seems arroyo regime has failed to institute measures to stop overpricing by unscrupulous big traders.. on the other hand, it has extra keenly scrutinized any substantial increase in minimum wages.. though it has once addressed the problem of hunger with insignificant band-aid measures like the much-vaunted food coupons scheme..

lately, the over-reliance of the philippine economy on foreign credit, leading to the worsening foreign debt crisis.. our foreign debt right now stands at roughly $56.3 billion.. arroyo refuses to repudiate the automatic appropriations act and assiduously makes debt payments.. instead opted to the imposition additional tax measures, which i'm afraid will not accrue to the the people in the form of improved health, education and other essential social services, but to foreign debt servicing.. (corruption will be something inherent already)
