Sugar substitutes are usually harmful to us.
They are usually synthetic or chemically modified.
In the US all diet soft drinks carry the warning signs on its can or bottle.
"Artificial Sugar used may be carcinogenic"
what does not cause cancer nowadays? even the air we breath is said to cause cancer. im not a big fan of soda drinks but its not going to kill you if you drink it moderately. at the end, we are all going to die one way or another.

I think the article about aspartame is just urban legend please check this out - http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/aspartame.asp
Here's another one which somehow more earnest http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/question536.htm
I'm a diabetic since I was 30+ (ok I admit my age). It is just too bad that there are few Philippine products that are allowed in our diets and I appreciate Nestle and some (soft) drink companies for being aware of this need and lessening our incoviniences......
Condemning a product like aspartame is not new to me. I was in the US studying food science and it was then that Aspartame was just introduced in the market while Splenda was in development. My professors did verify that it is safe to consume and that the incidence of cancers with the release of the product was more an aftermath of another sweetener- saccharrin & cyclamate - which were proven carcinogens during that time I think. That was why Aspartame and Splenda were released - to immediately provide safe alternatives to those older sweeteners.
Every pros has its cons (or is it vice versa?). Some websites do condemn these and I cannot verify their claims.
But what could be my options being a diabetic consumer here in Cebu? Well, there are a lot but unfortunately inconvinient when you are on a budget.
I rather avoid the old sweetners if possible (I've heard in the news that some of it are being circulated by sidewalk vendors and mixed with fruit juices -so please caution your school kids - canteen and cafe owners please do keep watch of the ingredients of the products you are reselling and avoid saccharrin, cyclamate and other sweeteners aside from Aspartame, Splenda or acesulfame- the latter seems to be used in many cola drinks if you read the ingredients) and I do drink less diet softdrinks (I agree that moderation is key but some temptations can't be resisted - softdrinks lang hehehe!).
So far Splenda is getting more attention by Americans because it can be applicable to cooking/baking while Asia still markets Aspartame which can be only be used in drinks and not in cooking or baking. Both are US FDA approved. To know more about AS see this link - http://health.howstuffworks.com/arti...-sweetener.htm
