For me its better to have understanding than memorizing like you are a parrot that doesn't comprehend at all!
Analyzing first would help you create your own solution to the problem. If exam requires formula you need to pull the formula out of you memory and in applying it you still have to anylize. If it requires you to list the procedures then you can actually come up w/your own words if you understood the steps. It doesn't have to be word by word & period over question mark unless your instructor is so pathetic that you have to write exactly how he presented it in school
