if i remember it right, the character of ben kingsley said that they have been reenacting/roleplaying with his fantasy/defense mechanism for about two years, and at the end of it, leo would always remember what really happened, but then he would fall back to his fantasy all over again.

Except this time, they succeeded with their experiment but Teddy Daniels has decided and I quote what he says: "Which would be worse, to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?"
