    The official new firmware has finally come out of beta. Check out Firmware 1.03.49_V for WD TV - Western Digital Community for details. Direct download is at http://download.wdc.com/wdtv/WDTV_Live_1.03.49_V.zip

    Yup ma-brick gyud if not done properly or if the flash process accidentally interrupted (i.e. by brownout).
    Naay small chance of unbricking depending on severity sa brick.

    If you still want the capability of accessing your network shares (win7) from wdtv live, ayaw sa update. Reports are coming in about some people not being able to access shares after the update.

    Good rule of thumb with wdtv live updating is to check out comments from various forums about the reliability of the firmware update.

    For those who prioritize the playing the newer mkvs with compressed headers, the new firmware will be for you.

    I decided to upgrade to the newest official firmware and true enough, the mkvs which had compressed headers are now playing.

    Downside is that I can't access the network shares (as of now). But I believe, I can find a workaround. For now, I have to rely on DLNA to get media streams from my network.

    Also, another downside is that I've lost the custom plugins which I added to my latest B-rad custom firmware. I guess I'll have to wait before B-rad works on the new firmware...

    Edit/Update: "Network Shares" working again after a reset.
