Gerry is 36 alright, but he's not lost as step as far as I can see. He's the same Peņalosa i used to see and his reflexes aren't shot.

Lopez wants to solidify status at Peņalosa’s expense

WORLD Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight king Juan Manuel Lopez is out to show that he is the real deal and plans to add Gerry Peņalosa to his list of victims this Sunday in Puerto Rico.

“There’s still some doubt out there about my real ability, but this big win over a great champion like Peņalosa will show everyone that I’m good and as talented as anyone in this division,” Lopez said in a report posted at FightNews.com.

Lopez has a great deal of respect for Peņalosa, who has been fighting for almost 20 years. However, he has no plans of letting go of his title.

“I welcome the challenge of this great champion and look forward to a great fight this Saturday. He has a lot of experience and has fought at a high level for a long time and it should be a great fight, but I expect to win to keep my world title,” said Lopez, who sent former WBO super bantamweight titlist Daniel Ponce De Leon to the canvas in the first round to steal the latter’s crown last year.

    Tough fight

Peņalosa lost to de Leon via unanimous decision in 2007, while Rey Bautista was knocked out by de Leon in one round also in 2007.

Although the odds are stacked against the 36-year-old Peņalosa, he is still confident that he will achieve his dream of a title in a third division.

“I have trained hard, because I know that it will be a tough fight. This great young champion has showed what he is made of, but I feel that I have the skills and heart to defeat him and take home the title,” said the WBO bantamweight titleholder. “I know that if I win this fight a lot of people will be surprised, but it makes no difference to me. I came here to win and that’s all I’m thinking about.”

This is Lopez’s third title defense. He stopped his last two challengers, Sergio Manuel Medina and Cesar Figueroa, in the first round. (EKA)

    BANAL'S MISSION

YOUNG ALA Gym standout AJ “Bazooka” Banal will be tested by tough African warrior Mbwana “African Golden Boy” Matumla on May 16 at the Cebu Coliseum, his first fight in Cebu since losing a title shot last year.

Banal (18-1-1, 15 KOs), who lost to Rafael Concepcion last year the interim World Boxing Association super flyweight crown at the Cebu Coliseum, wants the fight in the historic venue to prove to the Cebuano boxing fans that he has returned.

“Actually AJ was the one who picked Cebu Coliseum because he wants to fight there,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said in a press conference at the Sugbahan Restaurant last Wednesday night.

A new and improved Banal will be stepping into the ring against Mbwana (18-3, 15 KOs).

“A lot has improved. He isn’t hasty anymore and is now relaxed,” said ALA Gym trainer Edmund Villamor.

Banal was leading in all three scorecards when he faded late in the fight and got decked by Concepcion in Round 10. Banal got to his knee but didn’t beat the count.

“There’s no problem. I won’t run out of gas anymore. I’m very confident now,” said Banal.

After this fight, Banal will be campaigning abroad. But the 22-year-old Cebuano fighter won’t be fighting for another world championship yet.

“What we’ve realized is that there is no substitute for experience. We will take it one fight at a time,” said Aldeguer.

Mbwana is a former International Boxing Federation super featherweight titleholder and has fought the likes of world-rated Silence Mabuza (22-2, 18 KOs), former world title contender Pramuansak Posuwan (45-2-1, 24 KOs) and undefeated African Gabula Vabaza (23-0-1, 15 KOs).

On the other hand, fellow ALA boy Czar Amonsot (19-3-1, 11 KOs) is also scheduled to join the “Tuloy Ang Pagsubok” fight card. He will be facing Kenyan Morris Chule (11-6-2, 8 KOs).

This will be Amonsot’s return bout in Cebu. His last fight here was in 2006, when he won against Decho Bankluaygym by unanimous decision.

Both Banal and Amonsot won their comeback fights last January in the same card in Bohol. Banal knocked Nouldy Manakane in the fourth, while Amonsot decked Zoel Fidal in the fifth. (EKA)

    Penalosa might surprise Lopez, doubters
    by Doug Fischer

If the perception is that Penalosa is an “old man,” fans who tune into the Boxing After Dark broadcast might be in for a surprise.

Penalosa (54-6-2, 36 KOs) is one of the sport’s most well-preserved world-class veterans. The Philippines-born southpaw is a complete fighter with skill, technique and athleticism that is on par with elite advanced-age fighters like Bernard Hopkins, Juan Manuel Marquez and Shane Mosley.
    --
The speed and activity Penalosa had in his prime has dropped a notch, but that’s it. His legs look fresh, his reflexes are sharp, his punches are solid and accurate, and he’s as smooth as he ever was when he bobs and weaves his way in and out of his sparring partners’ punches.
    --
He slipped punches, and blocked and countered with jolting effectiveness during a sparring session that took place last Wednesday, just before the boxing press converged on the gym for Pacquiao’s Media Day.
