You are right. Eleven million is just a conservative estimate. For sure the figure is much bigger.

US confident in Cebu, ambassador says

CEBU CITY, Philippines - While some companies have closed or retrenched their workforce because of the global economic recession, the US government still has faith in Cebu’s workforce, according to an American diplomat.

US Ambassador Kristie Kenney, in her visit to Cebu City last Friday, said the US government has been focused on keeping its economy moving. The outcome of these efforts would benefit the Philippines and also Cebu City in particular, she added.
She said US-based companies like it in Cebu due to its friendly economic climate, especially to foreign investors. She cited as an example electronics company NCR Corp., which has offices in Cebu at the Asiatown IT Park – NCR Cebu Development Center Inc.

“NCR is very happy to have been here in the last five years. They’ve tripled their workforce and they have amazingly talented Filipino engineers,” Kenney said.

She said NCR Cebu is not just a business process outsourcing company, since it also engaged in hardware and software engineering.

Kenney said companies like NCR increase her confidence that the US would pull through the economic recession with the help of the Philippine workforce.

“These things highlight the great Filipino worker and it is always Cebu who hosts a lot of American companies,” Kenney said.

But while outsourcing to Cebu by US companies continues, the US would not open more job opportunities for overseas Filipinos workers who wish to work in the US, Kenney said.

The ambassador said that with many US companies slashing their workforce, the US government is focused on keeping the American workers utilized and consolidated.

“The president’s (Barack Obama) new Economic Stimulus Plan is to get people back to work, whether those are American, Fil-Am, or Mexican-American, the idea is to get people get back to work to help people to spend,” she said.

Kenney could not say how soon the stimulus plan’s effects on the global economy would be felt. She, however, believed that the plan would make a difference eventually.
“I don’t know how fast that will happen, I am not an economist but I confess to you I already feel confident of this good plan,” she said.

only 11 million out of the 80 million are unemployed? I'm shocked.

They probably counted the sikad drivers and sari-sari store owners as employed. They have revisited the definition of employment and made it comfortable to the government.

NO - only for americans - do you think the state will hire or prioritize non-immigrants over americans? there are thousands of Filipinos abroad but most of them are not US citizen.

its not that hard to believe that 11million Filipinos are unemployed. you have to consider the percentage that just waits for handouts from well off family or from OCW family. I have heard of a family of 4-5 dependent on the single income of a single OFW.

i was on a plane once from LA to HongKong and I sat beside an OCW. We talked and he said he had been in New Jersey for over 8 years without coming home. He was coming home for the 1st time in 8 years. He told me that in the 8years of working he had little to no savings. All his money was sent back home to support his brothers and his father and mother. I felt so bad because here is a guy who gave his best years in working the US all for what? to support a family back home. He told me his brothers could not get a job. I found that hard to believe. Getting a job is a matter of determination and pride. Its just being determined to get a job and why pride? Pride in accepting whatever jobs end up your way.

I know of a BILLIONAIRE here in the philippines who migrated to Canada legally. (he left the philippines due to kidnapping threats) he was a private businessman with little work experience outside his own business so when it came to getting a job it was very difficult with no experience. BELIEVE it or not he accepted a job working flipping HAMBURGERS at Mcdonalds! It a few months he made his way to being store manager... he said he just couldnt stand doing nothing... a BILLIONAIRE flipped burgers and you know what he told me... there is nothing wrong with flipping burgers for an honest day's pay...
