I'm not sure if current human technology (nuclear or otherwise) has the capability to "pulverize" an incoming asteroid/comet, esp. if it's larger than 1 kilometer in diameter.

hmmm i stand corrected with that i think it is very hard to powder a big meteor chances are the meteor will become 1 to many if that's the case so we have to deal the worst scenario instead...

chris go is a great cebuano astronomer. i think he's the founder and former president of usc astrosoc, he was rewarded by malacañang for his contribution to astronomy. you can tap him.
i've seen few of his telescopes during the mars watch few years back.
my friends are skywatchers too, in 2001 we went to mountain view to witness the spectacular leonid meteor storm! it was a celestial fireworks display with free admission.
