Walking wounded Giants out to bounce back vs Tigers
BY NOLI CORTEZ
WOES keep piling for Purefoods, but make no mistake about it the Giants are still raring to go.
"We believe we are still within striking distance of the leaders," said Giants coach Ryan Gregorio, whose charges duel with Coca-Cola today in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
At first glance, the words may sound hollow since apart from the continuing indefinite absences of Peter June Simon and Roger Yap (knee injuries) and Kerby Raymundo still to fully recuperate from amoebiasis comes Aaron Aban suffering from a viral infection.
However, there’s no lacking in the fighting attitude among Gregorio’s remaining charges.
"Admittedly, we are struggling," he said. "But we must still look for ways to win despite the trials and obstacles that we are facing this conference."
Purefoods is coming off an 80-90 loss to Ginebra last Sunday, its second loss in three games after a three-game winning streak.
Coca-Cola is much worse off, having lost its last three games, the last a 101-111 defeat to Air21 last Saturday.
Knowing fully well the Giants’ manpower problems, Tigers interim head coach Kenneth Duremdes has lined up a defense intended to disrupt Purefoods’ set plays while concentrating mainly on James Yap and Raymundo.
"Kailangang ma-limit ang touches nila James and Kerby, especially pag breakdowns," said Duremdes.
Gregorio anticipates such a ploy and knows exactly how that could be countered.
"The other teams have been successful clamping down on the offensive options of James and Kerby and this should be a challenge for the others to step forward and help in our scoring woes (80 ppg in our last two games)," he stated.
With Simon’s absence, Aban has become Yap’s main reliever, but so far has been averaging only 4.0 ppg, 13 below Simon’s usual production.
To make up for the discrepancy, Gregorio has altered his offense in such a way that the likes of Chico Lanete (6.5 ppg) and Topex Robinson (4.9 ppg) can help out Yap (19.8 ppg), Raymundo (17.9 ppg) and Rico Villanueva (12.4 ppg).
Coke has its own weapons in frontliners Asi Taulava, Nic Belasco and Mark Telan, who combine for averages of almost 43 points and more than 30 rebounds per game.
"Coke is always a match-up nightmare and our preparation against their ‘Big Three’ should serve us in good stead," said Gregorio.
But Duremdes has a deeper arsenal, including Alex Cabagnot (12.8 ppg), who also happens to be the league’s best in assists (5.4) and steals (2.4), and Ronjay Buenafe (10.00 ppg), who missed his team’s last three games due to his wife giving birth and then a right ankle sprain.
