The music scene in cebu is alive and is still growing...that being said, daghan pa kaayo ug kulang para makaabante ta. and i'm not only talking about the musicians and type of music that we have. there are so many other factors...

like for example, "support". do our musicians get a lot of support? yes and no. YES, kay naay mga organizers, radio stations, bars, etc. that let them play their music, and people that appreciate their music. NO, coz sometimes (well, most of the times probably), these some of these same people/groups are actually doing more harm to the musicians than good.

Some organizers think that 1. if they get 20 bands together, 2. look for a venue, 3. invite people they know, and 4. then have a little something for the bands (usually food & drinks)...then everybody happy na, and they get acknowledged as good organizers. Well, that won't work..

    1. 20 bands? you might have 4 or 5 bands who are good, the rest are crap. sayang ang maayo kay instead of getting longer playing sets na mas maapreciate sa crowd, they get the same amount of time as the crappy ones. kay the "organizers" doesn't screen the bands, and most of the bands barkada ra sa organizer. Why not have maybe 5 bands (3 good ones with 2 ok ones to open for them?)

    2. there were a lot of venues that accepts these events. but unfortunately, even if they want to support the music, it is still a business that needs to survive at the end of the day. now, some have closed down, and some are rethinking their policies regarding these events. one can argue na "they just want to make money, etc...", but one must accept, if walay halin, musirado ang negosyo, ergo, no more venues...capice? or if the groupies take over the place na mahadlok na muadto ang uban tao, wala nay lain bag.o na crowd na makapaminaw sa music sa bands.

    3. promoting the event properly is more than coming up with posters, airing it on radio, and inviting people you know. kay kung ang manunga ra kay ang groupies, walay punto. adto na lang mo sa balay sa kaila ninyo ug imbitaha ang mga barkada, pareha ra, wa pay hago. one must get OTHER people interested enough to go there and listen to their music. para naa na pud mga bag-o na admirers and followers sa banda. A GOOD CONCEPT is very important in every event!

    4. a little something for the bands? now this is the really hard part. food and drinks are usually taken care of by the bars. some bars even used to offer a percentage of the gate sales for the tf. how about the organizers? unsa man from your part? go look for sponsors para naa pud mo mahatag na gamay sa banda, ayaw mu ug salig sa venue. the problem is...let's say you want to give each band 1thou, but then you have 20 bands lined up, that's 20 f*ng thou already. but if you have only 5 good bands playing 30min or more each, then you just need 5thou. malingaw pa ang mga banda, mas malingaw pa jud ang crowd kay puro maayo ang nanukar. how to you get companies to sponsor? we're back to having a "good concept" in the first place.

WHEW! taas2x pud ni da.. anyway, this is just a nickel of thought and a dime of advice from me (even if unsolicited).

comments, violent reactions, affirmations are welcome.

by the way...yup, i've done my fair share of organizing, and thru experience na akong gipanulti.
