i think i've read something bout this issue before... one reason why widescreen lcds was built due to industrial reasons.. but anyway, if you want widescreen LCDs, just make sure you have a good videocard.

ako lcd k viewsonic va2226w paired with an integrated graphics which is an sis mirage from an intel D201GLY mobo gamit ang native resolution which is 1600x1050
playing old skool games (samurai shodown 4, mechwarrior 3, crusader - no regret)

The only problem with widescreen is, that it is not a standard.
Widescreen just defines everything wider than 4:3, so its not future proofed at all as stated anywhere in this thread. Widescreen could be 16:9, 16:10 (most 22" LCD are 16:10), 1.78:1, 1.85:1, 2.35:1, 2.37:1, 2.40:1 and so on... the list is long.
For movie watching, most DVD's are 16:9 (yes, little black bars on the 16:10 LCD), and BD are 2.40:1 (so a lot of black bars in the 22" LCD monitor).
