If you are a programmer then the answer to your question is how you will live your life that's how long you will stay in that career.. unless you want to retire soon and stop working.

The industry is always there.. and it will not end even if there is war, climate change or perhaps natural calamity.

yep, ill probably be MAKING programs/softwares for the rest of my life.... but my point was...

how long does an average programmer be EMPLOYED. lets face it guys... as we get older we become more expensive... we get more outdated.. newer and fresher + cheap mind will emerge to take our place... so either we become managers (who does not deal with the dirty works of programming) or owners...

we cannot be employed programmers till we retire... so thats my point. unless of course you disagree..

    e.x:

a 50 year old person applying for a programmer's job.. vs a 20+ something guy... who has the better chance?.

the 50 year old guy might be qualified for a managerial position but not the programming one...

    Idealism Vs. Reality

My answer to that if I would be an employer so I have a significant decision on what I want to you career coz you work for me.. the thing is you have to be realistic and to be honest with you I'm not going to hire a 50 year old guy over a new fresh latest skills.. I'm not saying the 50 yr old programmerr is better over the young guy even if he was part of the enginners who sent the man to moon.. I'm not going to choose him coz he might die soon and it will become a liability to your project hehe you see what I am saying?

Of course, in reality young minds can move fast and extend long hours versus the old guy just to be pratical in terms of productivity that's the end of the programmer's career life cycle I would say.

@Rance yep thats what i'm trying to say.... how long does it take the average programmer... until he is no longer effective to do the same job of programming...

my estimate is 10-15years... either he will be promoted to higher rank like a manager or he can start venturing another job/career...

you can share your own estimates too...

btw im still 23 not that old... just need to plan things out... so i can set goals, don't wanna be caught on surprise and end up jobless lol..
