As RP down to 3 athletes, POC refuses to throw in towel
MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose Cojuangco Jr. remained optimistic in the country’s campaign in the Beijing Olympics.
Cojuangco said it’s not yet the end for the remaining three Filipino athletes, as he stressed that the POC has not yet given up on the country’s medal quest.
Of the final three, however, only two—taekwondo jins Tshomlee Go and Toni Rivero—have a serious shot at a medal.
Ryan Rexel Fabriga, who will compete in diving Friday, is expected to finish empty-handed.
Go competes in the men’s 58kg category Wednesday where he needs to win four matches to earn the country’s first gold.
Rivero sees action in the women’s 67kg on Friday.
“We’re not yet giving up because I really believe we will be able to win a medal," Cojuangco said.
“There were some instances when breaks against our athletes did not come their way. Ang kailangan siguro ay dagdagan pa natin ang pagdadasal para matulungan itong mga kakampanya pa para sa bansa," Cojuangco added.
The Philippines, which was being left behind by its Southeast Asian neighbors in the medal standings, has yet to win a medal of any color in Beijing as competitions enter the last four days. The last time the Philippines won a medal was in 1996.

On men's Taekwondo, -58 kgs top player Chu Mu Yen of Chinese Taipei continues to roll after defeating Wamwiri Dickson of Kenya, 7-0, the most lopsided win so far in the tournament.
