    OT: update on AIPO Meeting

    *****************

AIPO needs to transform to serve as full partner of ASEAN

CEBU CITY -- Members of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization (AIPO) have agreed that the group has to reengineer itself to effectively address the pressing issues of regional security, energy and global trades.

In their speeches during the first plenary session held on Monday, the delegation heads recognized the need for a more integrated AIPO.

AIPO president and House Speaker Jose de Venecia set the tone of the 27th AIPO General Assembly held here when he stressed the need for the present congress to discuss the shift of AIPO into a more integrated organization.

According to De Venecia, both AIPO and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, its mother organization, are at the beginning of an epoch-making transformation.

"Our repeated calls for an eventual ASEAN Parliament -- supported by thorough feasibility studies -- have generated a consensus to rebuild and strengthen AIPO. I have no doubt it will soon become a full partner of the ASEAN leadership and the nucleus of an eventual parliament of one Southeast Asia," De Venecia added.

He cited AIPO's growing role in the region since it is the only one that can provide the parliamentary and constituency support for ASEAN’s vision of transforming 10 states into a single community.

"It is our burden -- and our glory -- to lay the foundation on which these communal structures are to be erected, so that we can then turn without distraction to the work of delivering our people at last from their bondage to poverty, ignorance and ill health," De Venecia said.

Sports Unlimited's Dyan Castillejo and Marc Nelson

    from Dyan's note:

Sonny and Jackie Dizon of Davao are the proud protectors of one of the rarest species of crocodiles. This species of beauties are called Crocodylus mindorensis.

Sonny tells us that these crocodiles have a very special place in his heart and that this place, before he bought it, was an abandoned pig farm.

Sonny decided to put this piece of abandoned land into good use so he turned it into the home of these endangered crocodiles.

He told us that giving these crocodiles a safe place to live was the only way to save them from extinction.

After a number of years, it is now obvious that Sonny's crocodiles have multiplied and have now outgrown this home of theirs.

They are now too big and too many and can no longer live here healthily and comfortably.

When we heard about Sonny's tireless efforts to save these rare species of crocodiles that were here in Davao we could not pass up his invitation to come see them and help transport them into their brand new home and facility that is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Davao: The Crocodile Park.

To our surprise though, not only were we going to watch these crocs being transferred. Sonny wanted Marc Nelson and I to literally get our hands on these fierce creatures.

My partner Marc, being an Aussie, had a natural affiliation with the crocodiles and seemed to be enjoying every minute of this close encounter with them.

I guess he finally got the feel of " a day in the life" of "Crocodile Dundee."

Sonny tells us that he did not think twice about spending to build this crocodile park.

The reasons being, first and foremost, to preserve these rare species of crocodile and second, he wanted all locals and visitors of Davao to enjoy a unique, up-close experience with crocodiles.

Sonny says he could stay in this park all day and just look at his scaly babies.

There sure was a big big crowd at the park. We were not sure who was the crowd drawer us or the crocs? Being the polite host that he is, Sonny said both drew the crowd.

Being able to have a little part in helping preserve the Crocodylus mindorensis. What a momentous occasion.

We salute Sonny for sharing his resources for the cause of these crocodiles and we also want to thank his very dedicated staff who everyday risk their lives to keep these crocodiles on this earth.

Hats off to Davao's Crocodile Park!

    A lil bit of history..

The Davao crocodile Park all started from the fascination of the owner, Mr. Philip Dizon, to Saltwater and Freshwater Crocodiles. He did not think of it as a lucrative business until he learned that crocodiles are raised in United States not just for public viewing but as well as for production of leather purposes. It was in November 1995 when the government has given the ownerthe accreditation and permit to operate the 1st Davao Crocodile Park. 10 years later, on August 18, 2005, the new and world-class Davao Crocodile Theme Park was opened with the help of the consultant Dr. Gilbert Buenviaje.

The Davao Crocodile Park is an establishment that showcases a ‘state of the art’ crocodile farming system in the Philippines. It has the most recent crocodile farm design equipped with modern facilities and equipments. The presence of other exotic animal species like raptors, monkeys, bearcats, snakes, birds, and other reptiles makes it one of the most desired tourist destinations in Davao. The purposes of this establishment are as follows:

    -tourism
    -public viewing and entertainment
    -venue for educational tours
-promotion of public awareness through regular lectures
-conservation of crocodiles and other wildlife animals and
-acts as a field laboratory for students in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine as well as for wildlife animal enthusiasts.
