Just finished "A Storm of Swords" by George R. R. Martin.
Just finished "Memoirs of a Geisha". Then saw the movie--a bit of a letdown, but then how would you squeeze the entire novel into a 2 and a half hour film? Also, changing the "minister" character to that of an American military officer was a bit corny, and I think this was the major change that led to the movie version's low ratings by movie critics.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.
Got intrigued because of the HBO series, but got hooked by the book itself.
