there are a lot of things that simply can't be translated. which is why you have those tiny explanations that go with the subtitles.

for example, how do you accurately translate "irasshaimasen"? Or take "Aniki" for instance, do you say "big bro"? it can get really get awkward at times.

then there's kenshin's "kaoru-dono". somehow, "miss kaoru" does not carry the same amount of weight when it comes to respectfulness. or imagine lucky star in english. i honestly don't know how they'd get away with that.

samurai champloo. one episode featured americans speaking in japanese with a funny accent. "desho" pronounced as "day-show". and the japanese attempting to speak english. we all know how that sounds. i haven't seen the episode dubbed by CN yet.

some might argue that dubbed anime is often done by professionals who know what they're doing. if that's the case, good. I enjoyed RahXephon in english and japanese, but this level of dubbing quality is rather rare. for the most part it's crap that we get from local shows and Animax.

@ Inahime: That's a good point which supports my opinion on watching subbed anime. Those tiny explanations really help in understanding why the character uses those terms or expressions.

And just like there are badly dubbed anime, we also have to admit that there are also really badly subbed anime out there. One example I have in mind is Gundam Seed Destiny (well, the copy that I have anyway). They were getting names mixed up and calling Kira Yamato "Kira Dahe" for some reason. On the other side of the river there are also equally well subbed and dubbed anime.

    Cheers!

yeah... sometimes the way it's spoken is part of the story, so i'd prefer to hear the dialogue as the director intended.

about the bad subtitles... I guess you just have to look for an episode that's subbed by your favorite fansub group. me, i prefer subs by GG, A.F.K. or Shinsen-Subs. I once saw an episode of HxH subbed by a chinese group. So a Japanese show + Chinese Subbers + English Language = International Hilarity.

yeah, i got the chance to watch samurai x trust and betrayal yesterday, and lucky for me the copy i obtained featured dual audio. I switched to Japanese right away and had a much better viewing experience. i dunno, somehow the english dialogue sounds "forced".

yeah dubbed versions sucks, sometimes ilisan nila ang line para mag.match sa movement sa mouth sa chara... it really destroys the anime....
example: when 4kids dubb dubbed One Piece... they massacred the anime... giundang man gani siguro pag.air sa one piece sa US cuz of that...

And most importantly... Anime should be Japanese...XD
Its not Anime if it's dubbed on a different language..
