ASEAN Summit preparations going well says organizers
Preparations for the upcoming 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in December are going well, according to the Cebu Organizing Committee, headed by Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr. and Governor Gwen Garcia.
The committee, during a press conference yesterday after their 3-hour meeting, announced that the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is already 66.65 percent complete and is ahead by around 2 weeks in its work schedule.
CICC architect Manuel Guanzon also said 95 percent of the structural requirement is ready and these will be immediately erected once delivered at the construction site.
The governor said the CICC can be completed by the first week of November because the province has the money to spend for it.

P2 billion allocated for purchase of readable passport machines
The government has set aside an initial P2 billion for the purchase of readable passport machines to strengthen the country's security network against fake passport holders.
Durano said the readable passport machines are expected to be used in time for the holding of the 12th Summit of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Cebu this coming December.
"With this system, we can be sure that the holder of the passport is the real owner and that the passport is not fake," he said.

Turn Cebu into a big stage
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:41am (Mla time) 08/16/2006
Some areas in Metro Cebu will be converted into big stages with actors wearing different types of Filipino attire from the “bahag” or g-string to women’s ternos as part of the cultural offerings for foreign delegates and their wives who will arrive for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December.
According to Cebu City first lady Margot Osmeña, the summit will not only be a political event but also a showcase of Cebu's rich history and culture.
Osmeña has been meeting with Mandaue first lady Linda Ouano and Lapu-Lapu City first lady Paz Radaza to plan how to entertain the wives of the foreign ministers and heads of states.
Their initial plans were already shown to first gentleman Mike Arroyo, who approved them, she said.
The preparations for the delegates’ spouses were discussed in a media forum on Tuesday at Parklane Hotel.
Nagiel Bañacia, Cebu City Hall protocol officer, said stages will be mounted in selected historic spots to show examples of life in Cebu in its early history.
The wives of the visiting dignitaries will be moving around Lapu-Lapu, Cebu and Mandaue cities to see the reenactment of different periods of Cebu, he said.
On the first day of the summit, the VIP spouses will ride a calesa or horse-drawn rig from Shangri-La's Mactan Island Resort and Spa to the Mactan Shrine to watch the reenactment of the Battle of Mactan.
After the show, the visitors will be treated to a Cebuano-style lunch together with a cultural presentation.
In the evening, a tour of Cebu City will provide a glimpse of Spanish colonial times.
A big stage in Malacañang sa Sugbo, Plaza Independencia and Fort San Pedro will depict a typical Cebuano village, Mrs. Osmeña said. Other offerings include a reenactment of the American occupation with the Capitol grounds as the stage.
The city tour will bring visitors to Fuente Osmeña and to downtown Colon Street, the oldest street in the Philippines where Chinese traders did their business along the sidewalks.
Mandaue City will show the visiting spouses the face of modern Cebu.
Mrs. Ouano said she will tap all makers of fashion accessories in Cebu for the gifts that will be given to the international guests.
Nindot na kaayo ang mga beautification activities (landscaping) ug clean-up drive.. Two days ago, I saw dozens or more of workers cleaning up the clogged canals and drainages in Fuente Osmeña.
I just hope that these will all continue even beyond the summit (with or without any international gatherings or what)..
As I've read in the newspaper, there's actually no controversy in the metal beams being used..Originally Posted by daMiro ronaB

Remember, when he was senator, he actually halted the funding for the South Coastal Highway in SRP (he was the chairman of a powerful financial committee) which explains why its completion was very much delayed. This is also the reason why he is sometimes labeled as anti-Cebu.
^^tsk tsk..grabe gyud na ka tsismosa c SONYA
anyway here's the SUBSTRUCTURE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS between the new CICC design and the old Mega Dome design..
