Why do bad things happen to good people?

It is an example for us - what would happen if so and so happened? Are we gonna try to prevent it? Act on it? How many of us are gonna show mercy towards the ones suffering? (If I may bring God into this) God gave us free will and so who is responsible for what is happening around us but us?

Some of us are to comfortable in our perfect, pain-free and materialistic bubbles that suffering falls on deaf ears. One might even bring up this question to argue about the existence of God (not saying this is the case for the TS). But denying His existence will not eliminate suffering.
