..it's just so sad to think that all the "beautifications" are only done whenever a special event like this happens..

but at least our mayor didn't hide the fact that cebu city belongs to a third world country and that poverty is pretty prevalent.. well no matter what, he couldn't hide it anyway in the first place..

i think ang problema man gyud is ang mga Filipino, daghan na biya gihimo beautifications bisan wala pa ang ASEAN summit but unsa man nahitabo...daghan vandalism n pangawaton ang mga gibutang sa dalan...so karon it is just right nga mag pa beautify na pud ta...kay na-a man ta bisita.....walay mahimo ang gobyerno nato if dili ma usab atong mind-set.....

Default Cebu Sees Profits In Asean Summit

Cebu sees profits in Asean summit
Published on Page A16 of the August 9, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

CEBU CITY—Holding the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Leaders’ summit in Cebu will infuse millions of dollars into the province’s economy, according to a regional tourism official.

Patria Aurora Roa, regional director of the Department of Tourism in Central Visayas, said holding the Asean summit in Cebu, which entails a series of meetings, will help not only the hotels and resorts, but also other support industries such as those in the retail sector and food suppliers.

“This will have a multiplier effect on the economy of Cebu, in particular, and the Philippines, in general,” Roa said.

She said a total of 10,000 persons will be in Cebu on various days to attend different conferences.

While the Philippine government will pay for the accommodation of the heads of states, Rey Fuentes, general manager of the Cebu Parklane International Hotel, said the estimated expenditure of each person attending the summit is about $200 each per day.

This would mean that for a one-day stay here, the 10,000 expected participants will be spending a total of $2 million.

Nagiel Bañacia, protocol officer of the Cebu City government, said the total spending will be not less than $20 million.

Recalling his experiences in attending summits and conferences in other areas, Bañacia said each person will be spending about $500 during their stay here.

PNP to augment Cebu security force for Asean Summit

Police Regional Office (PRO-7) regional director C/Supt. Silverio Alarcio bared additional policemen from neighboring provinces will arrive by mid-September to augment security preparations leading to the Asean Summit in December.

Alarcio however did not disclose how many policemen will be coming over next month but said 300 of these policemen will de deployed to Cebu City. The cities of Mandaue and Lapulapu wll also have their share of police augmentation.

The PRO-7 chief added that they do not want any minor incident to happen to any delegate while they are in Cebu. The police is currently reviewing their anti-criminality program to ensure the absolute safety of participants to the summit.
